Post Her looks
I'm very intrigued to know what Marie Antoinette looked like. We have quite a lot lovely portraits of her to look at, but portraits aren't necessarily accurate, so maybe we could share some descriptions other people made about her looks?

Was the queen really the great beauty as she is sometimes portrayed? I read a lot of remarks about her pretty complexion and her elegance, and the special way she used to walk.

I would really like to get a clearer picture of her, to imagine more vibrant what she did indeed look like.

Thank you in advance :)

It is true that the portraits of Lebrun are exaggerated, but we can refer more seriously to the portraits of Wertmüller, Kurscharsky and of Dagoty which are more realistic.

Here is one of Wertmüller which I like much:

Many contemporaries described Marie-Antoinette precisely, like Weber, Tourzel, Campan and Besenval: all are unanimous: Marie-Antoinette was noble, gracious, well proportioned, with a great face, Habsbourg lips, beautiful arms and a pure skin. :D
A real Queen! :D

In my opinion, this is how she really looked like:
Image
Pale, peachy, silky complexion, large deep blue ocean eyes, stong nose and chin, narrow face, long Habsburg ovale, Habsburg lip, long noble neck, carriage of a Queen, extremely beautiful...
Even in distress, like she is portraied on this painting by Kusharsky in the Tuileries, this slight mysterious half smile of a living soul...
Image
Ealier, by the same artist. We can see her sandy blond hair with this wonderful "à l'enfant" hairdo, like a fragile cloud around her sensitive face.

Her portraits by Kusharsky are my favorite ones, for they show a strong willing woman, clever and proud. From written testimonies, we can also read that she was noble, indeed, very gracious, tall for XVIIIth century (thus average for us), quite stout and bosomy. The most noticeable was her complexion, so shiny and so pure that Mme Vigée-Lebrun could not find colours to restitue it, and her ethereal lightness. Zweig wonderfully puts it : her real beauty appeared when she moved. And her contemporary Tilly wrote that she was a true Queen. As we approach a chair to any lady, we would always like to approach her throne to Marie Antoinette.

I also admire her on this painting by Vigée-Lebrun:
Image
She seems to get out of a dark forest, holding her rose like a symbol, Queen of the night, mysterious Hecate with her silky bosom, magnificent goddess of secret feminity, out of reach, forever perfect and ghosty...

This portrait of Dagoty (1775) shows a majestic and rather realistic Marie-Antoinette:

So majestic that Marie-Thérèse was disturbed by it

Isn't it about this portrait that Madame Mère said that her daughter looked like an actress ? "Her name was Lola, she was a show-girl, with yellow faithers in her hair..."

Just kidding... I love this painting !

Yes it is

Ah Marie-Thérèse and delicacy!!
She reproached also the very high hairstyle of her daughter. But me also I love this portrait : it is splendid and all the majesty of Marie-Antoinette is seen: This is the Queen who is seen.

Indeed. And she wears a very beautiful pouf. Usually, it is not my favorite hairdo. I am fond of "à l'enfant" hairdo. Just wonderful ! I think we could spread this fashion again, couldn't we ?

Not for you, Chou, don't be afraid... Just for girls... You'd have to have your hair like that :
