Post Hello All...
I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a fashion designer whose infatuated with the 18th century. I fell in love with Marie Antoinette and Versailles when I was 14 and since then I've been crazy about everything from the 18th century. One day I'd like to make a 100% historically accurate hand sewn 18th century "robe" (gown) with , stays, pannier, petticoat, chemise, and pockets out of 100% silk and cotton. It's gonna cost a lot of money and take a lot of time but I can't wait to start it.

Ah Bonjour Madame Bertin welcome to these lovely, forums. Just a warning after reading up in cotton, I would strongly advise for you to stay away from cotton as it was banned in England, France and Prussia. Linen would be a better choice and here is a site I found silk au nautrale for only $6.00 a yard which is fantastic so in theory making an 18th century costume shouldn't be too expensive.

Oh silly me! I forgot to post the site!

Here is one of my favorite 18th century dress making sites she has alternative boning for corsets, and fabulous collection of dresses.

http://www.jennylafleur.com/study/boning.htm (for boning)

Here is silk that costs only $6.00 a yard.

And here are silks that come in bolts I have recently stumbled on! :)

And the silk per yard is 3.81! Which is even better. However I'm not about the quality it all may seem to good to be true, so I would simply order a swatch to be sure.

You're welcome. However I read that China Silk was not accurate for Elizabethan times, however I believe China Silk is accurate for the 18th century.

Post Re: Hello All...
thank you so much for the information!

I realized that if I want to make this dress as accurately as I can, I'm gonna need a lot more help with this than I thought.

I decided I'm gonna start small and make this dress for a doll and give it to my niece as a gift. I've already started designing a few dressess that I'm going to pick from. once I pick one I'll document the whole process on this forum!

Sadly, That is the case with 18th century costuming. However if you read up on the clothing it's not nearly as intimidating as you may think it is. I would love to make a robe a la francais, I need to work on my sewing skills though! I'm still trying to make a polonaise dress, I'm waiting until summer because I have enough energy not, not enough time though.
