Post French Royalty
I was just wondering what happened to all of the nobility and royal family that fled Versailles before its fall. I know Louis the sixteenths brother came back and had a short rule but what happened to the others?

Post Re: French Royalty
Since the most of them (aristocrats) had lost all of their property (it was confiscated) I doubt that they came back to France right away, after the revolution. Also the Regime was very strict towards the refugees and they could face the severe punishment. During the reign of terror many “suspicious” cousins of the aristocrats that had fled the country were guillotined. As the supporters of monarchy, they certainly weren’t welcome to come back. I suppose some of them had returned after the turbulent period in France (like painter Elisabeth V. Le Brun ) but I don’t know anything to tell you precisely.

I was always wondering how France managed to develop after loosing so many members of the cultural, intellectual elite. :?

Thanks for explaining that and I think France lost a little bit of their culture when the destroyed the monarchy and nobility.

You’re welcome, I agree with you in that matter.

its accually reallly sad because it could have been worked out in a more peaceful manner, the peasants really unknowingly ruined much of the appeal of france, and i think later they relized that (hence Louis XVIII and Charles X). they also REALLY over reacted .

Well, I think Louis XVIII and Charles X were reinstalled on the throne by the foreign powers after the fall of Napoleon...Anywat, about what you said I agree. In general, peaceful solutios are always preferable, also beacuse they don't throw the history and culture of a country upside down (apart, of course, from the bloodshed).

Yes that’s true, Louis XVIII was on the throne after the fall of Napoleon but as I remember he didn’t stay there long.

He didn't stay long the first time Marija, but then after Waterloo and the final defeat of the Emperor, he was King for 9 years until his death in 1824.
