Post Re: For Members who visited Versailles
I also plan on visiting France again next summer, with intentions of seeing Versailles, both Trianons, Fontainebleau (which will be a first for me), Chantilly, Vaux-le-Comte if possible, and Chateau de Maison--one of my favorite buildings in France. If anybody has other palaces & chateaux to recommend (near Paris) please let me know!

Saint-Germain-en-Laye is pretty cool.

I was under the impression that St. Germain was completely destroyed.

Chateau-Neuf was destroyed, but Chateau-Vieux is still there. It's now the National Archeology Museum.

Comte, how very fortunate you are in gaining admittance to private areas in the palace. Have you ever thought about putting together a small tour of Paris and Versailles using your excellent contacts? Keeping the group small enough to be manageable and also to house and feed well? Perhaps a little champagne on the lawn as a reception the Versailles-meisters and members of your family.

In Russia we did something similar and ended up at a champagne reception at the Yussouppov's tea house followed by dinner. In fact we drank vodka and champagne everywhere we went. The trip was extraordinary at the time and will never be repeated.

WELL!!!

I thought this was such a lovely idea but absolutely not one response from a single member. :(

Don’t be sad winsan2! The idea is marvelous but hard to realize. :(
We haven’t seen Comte on this forum for a while too.

Why we should all stay in Versailles of course! I think the town itself is full of all kinds of lovely and or economical places. Could we have an extensive private tour too? :!:

Oh, how I would love to go to Paris again, many wonderful places to visit…
Still, even if I travel this spring, it won’t be to France.

I've been fortunate enough to visit Versailles three times; each visit was wonderful. I took the general tours and was fortunate to have competent and informative guides each time.

I do wish that more of the palace was made available during the tours. For example, I would love to see the secret passages connecting the various rooms; the nobility accommodations; the private rooms behind Marie Antoinette's public bedroom; the kitchen, etc.

Maybe next time.

Some day, we'll all visit Versailles again. And we'll think "wow! This is a place visited by almost all the members of MA Online!" And it is very nice to imagine :)
