Post Viva La Vida
reminds me of the famed king and queen. =]

but i read somewhere it was about Charles X.
?

gotta love Coldplay.

Lyrics:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sweep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

Ooooo ooooo ooooo oooooo ooooo
(repeat with chorus)

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh

I do not care for Coldplay, or for the way they used the Liberty portrait to sell their record.

omg yeah, as i listened to it i was like....wow this sounds familiar. but i read an interview with them and they didnt say anything about Louis XVI and MA as inspiration, but that line " the old king is dead, long live the king" and "the revolutionarys wanted my head on a silver platter" are really close to their life

I like the lyrics but I am not so impressed how it is combined with music. :(

I actually think that this song is about Jesus. Almost every single line can be directly related to him. It's quite interesting.

I love this song (and the album)

I have read many interpretations of the lyrics, and the two most common are Jesus and then MA and Louis. I can defintely see the relation to Charles X though as the album cover is Eugene Delacroix's 1830 painting Liberty Leading the People. Which was an image in memory of the revolution that toppled Charles X
