Additional information on Catherine Hyde [Hyams] can be obtained by running a Google Book Search query. Here are two queries which list references:

Please see this inscription on page (i) of "Letters of the Marchioness Broglio Solari"... (aka: Catherine Hyde)

http://books.google.co.nz/books?id=lmEu ... broglio%22

...the inscription reads:
Quote:
"I received these notes from this poor lady, while I was Minister in London. She was then over 90. I knew nothing other at that time I supposed her to be insane."
(!)

The inscription written by one William Everett? Tutor, Harvard University?...1859...

I'm also keen to find out anything in connection with Catherine Hyde / the Marchioness Broglio Solari, as there is a book ("Ugo Foscolo, nel centenario del suo insegnamento all'Università di Pavia, 1809-1909") which refers in it's index on page 231 to:
Quote:
925). Hyde Caterina. 88 Dean Street, Soho Square, 7 gennaio 1825. Italiana,

And I myself lived at exactly this address a few years ago! :-o

Henry Hyams is my great, great, great grandfather.. I listened to stories all of my life about Kitty Hyde. On her visit to the colonies she brought with her a snuff box which she claims Marie Antoinette gave to her. I am in possession of the snuff box as well as the Hymas family Bible where the notes are supposed to be enclosed. It is possible there are writings embedded in the tartoise shell cover, but since the Bible dates back to the 1400's, I am relunctant to try and recover them. I am also in possession of a goblett from Judah P. Benjamin's home.

A cousin's wife found a book titled THE JEWS OF IRELAND. The author has a chapter on Kitty Hyde and let's just say, what he writes about Kitty does not coincide with the family lore.

Thank your for your post! That is fascinating information.

Would it be possible for you to photo the snuff box and post it here? It would be fascinating for us to see it if it's not a family secret! Is it elaborate?

What have you heard through your family about Catherine Hyde's history and relations to the Queen and Mme de Lamballe,

Certainly will post a picture of the snuff box. It presently is housed in my safety deposit box, so it may take a couple of days to get to the bank. I dug out some family papers which are quite old and faded. This is something of interest I found written about Kitty:

Samuel Hyams and wife Miss Isaacks
Issue: Solomon, David, Isaack, Samuel and Catherine.
Catherine married a Venetian nobleman and became Marchinoness of Solari-she was Maid of Honor to Princess Lamballe (who was Lady in Waiting to Marie Antoinette, said Princess Laballe being owner of the Hope Diamond at one time). It is the tradition in our family that Catherine's blood was the first shed in the French Revolution, as was was driving in a carriage behind the Queen's when a shot from the street went through her gloved hand that grasped the strap of the carriage.

Interesting if true Catherine Hyams/Hyde being the first to shed blood in the French Revolution. Never remember hearing that story.
