Post Any fans of Tolkien here?
I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan and am currently reading the Silmarillion for the first time. I love Tolkien's world, his characters and races, his languages, his imagination. Is anyone else here a fan?

Do you prefer the book or the film?

LOTR? The books. But I do love the films too, I think that they were really well done.

I like the first and the second episodes of LOTR, but I am afraid by the third... (with the spider).

But in fact, I don't really love the fantastic world...

I don't mind the spider .. though I don't like em in real life. The second book has always seemed the weakest to me, with the first the richest. This goes true for the films as well.

The movies were pretty good; I mostly watched them for Arwen's costumes. I tried reading The Hobbit but it was really boring, and everyone keeps telling me, "it gets way better!" but I don't feel like it.

I don't actually like the Hobbit all that much - LOTR is way better. ANd I don't think you need to have read the Hobbit to read the Trilogy .. I hadn't read it when I read LOTR.

The Silmarillion is quite heavy going, i must admit ;)

I am a Tolkien fan. I went to The Eagle and Child where him and C.S. Lewis met. And I walked around the campus/courtyard into a chapel where there is a bust of him there, I got I picture of myself there. And I went into a little town called Slaughter, despite the name it was gorgeous! You could definatly see where Tolkien got inspiration for The Shire. I love the Cotswolds. :) And technically in the books Shelob ( The giant spider) was in The Two Towers. And how the hobbits rid of the Ruffians are in the third book. Peter Jackson never even bothered to put that in.

I am a BIG Tolkien fan!!!!
The Lord of the rings is one if my favourite books and I think it's a masterpiece, definetly.
The movies are quite good, but I think they can't be compared with the books...maybe it's always like this when you have to do a movie out of a great work of literature.Anyway, I'm quite angy because they changed my favourite charachter radically, and it did him no justice :x

I definately agree with Rosalie, you cannot compare the books to the films. And M. Andre, perhaps the reason why you didn't like it because it was originally supposed to be a childrens' book I don't know, I know I enjoyed it.My family had a yard sale, I found a copy of The Hobbit from when my father was 8-10 years old, and I kept it know keeping it as a family heirloom (sort of).
