I wonder too, dear, and tried to find information already. I think they used pieces of linnen, you know, as they still did 50 years ago. Did they wear underwears on these periods, to hold these specific pieces ? I don't know. Possibly. Also, they used to roll their shirts then. We don't know how lucky and confortable we are nowadays !

One thing I am sure about : when Marie Antoinette suffered from hemorrages in the conciergerie, Rosalie cut pieces of her own shirts to give her. She wrote it.

I do believe that they also put thin strips of cotton in their pantiloons in those days.

Did they wear such underclothes ? I don't know... They usually did not, they only wore petticoats. However, maybe they put pantiloons for those specific days. I wonder...

... and I'd really like to know...

Women in that era did not wear anything that we would call "underwear." Pantalets and drawers/bloomers weren't worn until the Regency Period.

I know that, Monsieur André. However, I have read somewhere that, in these specific periods, they could. That's why I wonder.

They didn't wear underwear?! That's .. um .. interesting.

I presume that they wore linen pads too, yeah. Remember that in those days, many women would have been pregnant a good deal of their fertile lives and so periods would not have been an issue.

Don't you feel much better for knowing? *grins*.

I wonder what poorer people did though - those who could not afford to buy linen or other cloth for makeshift pads continuously but didn't have good washing facilities. Like I said, they would often have been pregnant or breast feeding but still they must have menstruated sometimes.

They just dealt with it as everyone woman of that class had done before them, that was simply the way it was. Why do you think we have wisdom teeth? Becuase back then dentistry was still so far behind that after everyone lost there teeth they had another set! Now we have come so far that we can keep our teeth and wisdom teeth cause more problems than solutions!

This is an historical topic, which means that I could know just as much, if not more, about this topic than any woman.

Of course the fact that you put for girls only meant that all the men on the site hastened to read these posts! But you knew that.... 8)

General netiquette says that if it's posted publically, anyone can read it - you simply can't tell some people that they're 'not allowed' to and even if you do, there is no way that you can stop them :). Anyway, I see no reason why men cannot read this top. As someone else said, it's a historical question.
