^^ yeah, that sounds pretty accurate.
she could have been more of a strawberry blonde in her youth, but i think she had the sandy blonde Pimprenelle described.

also, if redheads weren't thought on politely in France, maybe Madame Du Berry exaggerated this to give her a flaw. pure speculation, of course!

Marie Antoinette is reported to look like her sister Carlotta :

I guess both ladies could have the same sandy blond hair with auburn glints.

I have read that during the revolution, Antoinette's hair turned pure white. As far as I am aware this is a physical impossibility - hair is dead and hence cannot change colour .. it can only start growing in a new colour. Does anyone know anything about this rumour?

Yes several witnesses say that her hair bleached during the trip Varennes-Paris in June 1791, which lasted 3 days... heat, tiredness and stresses would be the causes... But according to other sources, these are not the her hair which would bleached but just some wicks... what seems more logical

What do you mean by wicks? :) Oh wait, do you mean wigs? That sounds more likely. Her actual real hair simply could not have changed colour in three days without some chemical agent on it.

In my view, this rumor comes from Mme Campan, who tragically told in her memoirs how Marie Antoinette removed her hat while coming back from Varennes and... tadam ! Her hair had completely turned white !

It is a rather strange story, especially when we read Rosalie Lamorlière's testimony. She used to take care of the queen in the conciergerie, and reports that her hair was blond, with just some grey on her temple. Antoinette told her that this hair got grey when her son died.

Nevertheless, some doctors took Henriette Genet's tragical story into account, and speak about "syndrome de Marie Antoinette" for someone whse hair suddenly turn white. Actually, this disease, caused by a shock, provokes the loss of the "good" hair. Only the white one remains.

If this ever happened to Marie Antoinette, her hair were back when she was imprisoned in the conciergerie. And Rosalie saw a blond lady.
