I'd actually be interested to know how often they did laundry and how it was done. With stuff like linen and undergarments it's a fairly simple matter of boiling them up with soap or something I'd guess but how were those dresses cleaned? Or were they simply not?

yea i guess you could wash some of the dresses but if they were satin or silk they start to ware away when you wash i would say back then so you would sometimes spot clean them but thats my opinion.

To make the laundry was called in French "blanchir le linge" (to make the linen white). Furthermore, people such as Rosalie Lamorlière or Madame Richard insist on how their white clothes (leur linge) looked white.

I think they used many techniques in order to have their clothes white, other than to wash them.

Well, I do know that Elizabeth I had all her gowns perfumed heavily becuase they couldn't be washed they were so heavy, but that was in 16th C.
