Post subject:  Marie-Antoinette's Pearls going up for auction

I got this story from a yahoo email alert.
Pearls once belonging to Marie-Antoinette are going up for auction. Marie-Antoinette gave a bag of pearls and diamonds to a Lady Sutherland, the British ambassador's wife in 1792
Here's the link to the story:

I would, but I'm not that keen on pearls...

It sure is a beautiful necklace, though. And so very expensive! It goes on sale the day before my birthday.. of course, I jokingly hinted to my husband about it.

I wonder what Marie Antoinette thought of the Countess of Sutherland? She's described in the press article as being a friend. However, this woman turned out to be one of the most infamous players in the Highland Clearances, responsible for perpetrating some of the most barbaric evictions. I didn't make the connection when I read the article first, but it suddenly dawned on me when I was chatting about the pearls to a friend. I live close to the area where she had her estates and to this day her name is held in revulsion here.

How unfortunate that we cannot see how the necklace would have looked when in Marie Antoinette's possession. It is such a shame that it was broken up!

The Sutherland family should return these jewels to Versailles, where they would be displayed in honour of the Queen? If the story is true, as I doubt their authenticity, these pearls were given the Countess of Sutherland in safekeeping by a desperate woman.

You're right, baron de batz! It would be so nice that they send them to the Versailles and not sell them!

I don't know if we are talking about the same pearls, but one of Marie Antoinette's necklace went very recently for auction (around the 20th december) and was finally not sold.

yes, it is the same necklace, I am surprised that it wasn't sold, considering the history the pearls have.

I was astonished too, the necklace was shown in the news and it is just ... wow ! as you said, considering its history :o . I didn't understand if it was Marie Antoinette's necklace or a necklace composed of pearls she owned... :?
