Post Louis XVI playing jokes during rising ceremonies?
I have also read that His Majesty would rise three hours earlier, work on his locks. However, he would make people chase after him to put on his clothes running off without some article of clothing during the rising ceremony. I simply find it amusing if that is the case.

Somehow I think that Louis' girth would have made it unlikely that he could move so fast that people would actually have to chase after him!

I apologize for not being specific enough. I meant when he was younger. M. Andre. When he was say- eighteen. Needless to say I still find it rather odd. He seemed like the easy -going and understanding character, always calm- that is until I read that! I highly doubt it that he would run around after gaining a lot of weight and maturing a bit (emotionally) , it would have been not quite regal had he been pulling those antics at 30! ! :)

At 18 he was still quite portly, and of course a married man! I just don't think his story is true, I'm sure it's just a fabrication, perhaps to the tune of "let them eat cake?"

I read that in Castelote's book though so I'm not quite sure..... even though he was portly that didn't mean he couldn't run. :)

Louis did not get portly until he was in his late twenties, early thirties. He was very physically active, with all the hunting and working at the forge. He also had a sense of humor. I am pretty certain that the story of such antics is true.

I think it is true. I just find it amusing, extremely amusing . Just another redeeming charm of Louis XVI. Well, his antics certainly removed any risk of boredom in the duration of the rising ceremony!

Yes, I'm so tired of everybody thinking he was always "fat" and especially when they say he was fat when Antoinette saw him for the first time and when they married.

Yes, when he met Antoinette, he was actually quite thin, tall and gawky, a typical 15 yr old-- not chubby AT ALL.

I know exactly. It irritates me a lot. Because when he was younger he would have certainly been able to run and scamper about.

Hmmm... Perhaps the reason biographers say he is so fat is because they like to pretend she was so beautiful and youthful and he was revolting in appearance. Didn't one woman comment after seeing the wedding that Louis was tall, thin and handsome? Oh well... we can always hope. :)

Hey you guys--he was tall and not reported as being as fat as the caricatures which began to appear in the pamphlets. He was enormously strong and a big man--6'4" in one estimate on this website. I've read about the fooling around during the lever ceremony AND another amusing anecdote which includes all three brothers and their wives at dinner privately--an argument broke out and ended with the royal brothers rolling around on the floor wrestling. They were, after all human and beyond reproach. There's even a very funny story about Louis XIV and his brother at the age of ten and nine behaving like little heathens. I enjoy stories about their very human emotions and behaviors. AND many heavy people are very quick on their feet.

We weren't suggesting he was fat at all when he was younger. We're aware that he was indeed quite slim, when he was younger. I'm not sure when he played jokes, I'm sure he did those when he was younger and more cheeky. He did get a bit heavier when he was older, however, everyone does. I too enjoy reading stories about these situations they make Louis and Marie Antoinette more "accessible".
