A) Ernestine was adopted and Marie Antoinette raised them together so Madame Royale was humbled or less arrogant.

B) Perhaps Ernestine was almost like a servant and added t. o the registry to the expenses of The Children Of France.

C) Louis XVII thought that Madame Royale and Ernestine are like sisters since they were raised like sisters.

Reply:

A) A fair point, one raised by many opponents to the "bit on the side" theory. Especially as we know the Queen similarly raised a little boy named Armand. And wanted MTC to share out her presents etc with poor children. This is admittedly in her capabilities.
B) Highly unlikely, this registry was for the Children of France. Unless by putting Ernestine in the register it was a further way of showing that she brought her up on an equal footing. But it would have been a major break with tradition.
C) Fair point, which follows on from A)

Well, Ernestine was indeed on the registry for the Children of France. She was educated, raised and was with MTC throughout her time in the Tuileries and when the family went to stay at Saint-Cloud. Pauline de Tourzel was as well.

Indeed, the theory may be correct. In childhood, she possesed no Aquiline nose. So, without seeing a portrait of her mother, I don't think I could say any different.

The idea that Louis XVI would have a mistress and beget a child is not mentioned in any serious biographies of the KIng. It was completely against his character and his goal of raising the morals of the court. He deliberately wanted to be the opposite of his grandfather, whom he felt had brought shame upon France with La Pompadour and the disastrous Seven Years War.

Nagel's bio of MTC explores some of the theories in this regard, without offering any substantial evidence. Nagel herself in the end comes to the conclusion that the Dark Countess was NOT the daughter of Louis XVI, whereas the Duchesse d'Angouleme and MTC were definitely one and the same person.

The Nagel book and the idea of Louis XVI having mistresses has also been discussed on this thread:

I'm still reading Marie-Therese, Child of Terror, and I didn't know about this supposed sister. Finding out was a shock, it was like hearing my dad cheated on my mom.

I know what you mean but do not worry. A lot of that stuff is for shock value since it is pure legend and unsubstantiated, even by the author of the book.

I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. Stupid rumors! I've always liked Louis, it just doesn't seem like him.

I agree, it does not seem like him at all.

I'm not letting myself believe it. It seems too silly.

It seems too out of character for me to believe.

I want to continue reading the book, but I don't want to keep going over the rumor. Have you read it? Does it drag on?

It gos into the Dark Countess theory a bit but mostly focuses on the life of Marie-Therese-Charlotte, with many interesting details. It is worth reading.

It is still very interesting, but honestly, I don't tink the dark countess theory could even be plausible anymore.
For that to happen, Ernestine would have to have the same parents, MTC looks DEAD UP like MA, I do see a bit of Louis, just a bit.
