|Post subject:||The Actual Age when the consumation happened? (Cronin)|
I am reading from Vincent Cronin's Louis and Marie Antoinette. I have read that the King and Queen did not consummate their marriage in 1777, but it was consummated earlier in 1773. Is it true? He says that Marie Antoinette told her mother that she was not yet pregnant and that Louis XV hugged her after learning that the marriage was consummated. Cronin says that they are unpublished letters etc, but I do not trust them. Is it valid?
Anyone who has read Louis and Marie Antoinette please help!

The details are in many books, but are probably not appropriate for this forum. Let's just say that intercourse was not completed until 1777, after the king's little operation. They attempted intercourse many times before that, but Louis was unable to finish. The court probably considered finishing to be consummation.
The actual "operation'" (circumcision) is not documented, but the circumstantial evidence that it occurred it is very convincing. Louis determined to have it done a couple of times, but lost his courage when faced by the surgeon's instruments. It took Antoinette's brother Joseph to convince him to have it done.

This topic of this sort has been indeed discussed here! However for some odd reason I tend to lean towards the marriage being consummated in 1773. There are letters in French Marie Antoinette wrote to her mother, but I will have to translate them.
