EM Vidal has this interesting post of Louis XVI sculptured in military attire:

This is a quite different take on the King in portraiture.

He was a handsome man even though some would beg to differ

The sculpture seems in a classic fashion...Yes, it's very different from how we usually see the king, and it's interesting! Thank you!

Yes, classical fashion and different from the picture we usually have in mind. In fact it is great although his body is a bit changed, too muscular and with a very narrow waist. But it is quite good for its purpose. He was young then and maybe he could resemble the statue a bit?

Yes, I think so. Of course it was idealized, but maybe it resembled the king a bit, as you said

Me too...a bit..(Ha)....Louis was purported to be quite soft... but in actuality, isn't hunting and riding quite a bit of exercise? Or was this statue just complete and over the top flattery?

Well, both is probably true. I mean, the statue was a flattering, beyond doubt, but it's also true that, when he was young Louis wasn't fat...

Yes, he was said to have gained weight in his 30s. Even so, he was a very strong and athletic man.
