One gripe I had with the MA film was that it showed Antoinette as some sort of sexual predator who seduced Fersen when such a thing is not proved

I could not agree with you more, Moose !

Let's imagine Marie Antoinette were in love with Fersen... just for a sec... This would never happen this way ! Of course not !

Between these romantical "je vous embrasse de tout mon coeur" of her letters and those "j'ai son amour, il a ma foi" of her music, we find nothing but sweet and tender feelings...

... certainly not those brothel scenes miss Coppola shot ! :x

oh that was a horrible scene! I like the movie as an enjoyable Versailles visit but that's all. It was the most unnecessary and totally wrong scene.

As far as that scene, i have two takes on it . One is purely artistic and i think that from that standpouint, the editing and photography of that scene was great. From my own views on MA and her personality, circle, etc... i thought it was totally wrong. I think that MA would be raging mad if she saw that put in film form about herself... and her husband and probably Fersen would be just as indignant. You can' t help notice how, by trying to humanize desperately this woman, they besmirch all of the honour she vould have had. Sad and repulsive

I am sorry to disagree, dear Oceane. Even on the artistic standpoint, I find this scene vulgar. It immediately reminded me of a Western brothel with some kind of Calamity Jane waiting for her next client.

I think that she loved him for being father to her children and good and nice husband. She help him many times and he even cry in her room when he had economic problems.. :)

You are right, dear ! Marie Antoinette acted and died like a queen, she always stood on her king's side.

What book was it? If it was the Coursacs or Fay, they are very negative about the queen. Yes, there were times MA disagreed with her husband and tried to get him to see her point of view. But I would not say she was an intriguer.

Yes you're right Therese, it was in the Fay biography. I guess he was just biased against her - glad it's not true :)

I love Fay's portrayal of Louis but he is clearly prejudiced against Marie-Antoinette.

I have just remembered something relevant to the earlier part of this topic discussion. In trying to prove that couple loved each other - i read that while on trial , when Marie Antoinette was asked about her frittering money away she said " no, I loved my husband too much to waste France's money..."
I think that means something

Yes. At any rate, it was a clever answer.
