I agree Marie Antoinette...glad I'm not the only one  and his character seems just as becoming.

To the point about changing beauty standards, it's interesting to read the descriptions of Polignac, which unanimously held her to be "no great beauty," but always with some sort of qualification -- there was always something irresistable or mysterious about her. To my modern eyes, she was the hottest of the bunch. Perhaps her look was just not in fashion.

Where have you read that she was "unanimously" considered no great beauty?

Yes, I don't understand either. Did I miss something?

I mean to say that the descriptions I've read are unanimous... something about her being "graceful but not beautiful," and "no great beauty but somehow irresistable" if I remember correctly. Point being, even if beauty standards oscilate, there's still an intrinsic dimension that remains constant.

What authors are unanimous on this? All the authors I have read agreed that Madame de Polignac was considered a beauty, "La Belle Gabrielle."
