He looks a good deal older than he was in that second picture (am I right that that was drawn whilst he was in prison?). He was less than forty when he was executed but he looks older than that.

He had gone through a lot, some severe illnesses and at least one nervous breakdown. He was under incredible strain, and had been since ascending the throne.

Obviously :(. She looks a good deal older than her age too in that last sketch of her but then I suppose she WAS on her way to the guillotine.

Its amazing how people can change in only one lifetime. If you look at Louis XVI's early pictures , he looks sooo different . I guess thats what happens when life beats you down ...

I read that a radical change had occured in him even fromthe time span he came intothe temple to when he went to the guillotine, because Madame royale - in her memories said that she found her father much changed.

Remember it was a caricature made by a revolutionary... He drew "the awful Austrian", not the woman he actually saw passing by...

As for Marie Antoinette's hair. Everybody say that it had turned white. However, Rosalie Lamoreliere reports that Marie Antoinette's hair was blond, just a little bit grey on her temples.

Why does everyone still pretend that Antoinette was as white as an old lady, and looked so old ? Because it is romantic to imagine that she had been so gracious and so beautiful... for finally looking ssssoooo miserable...

A specific version of the rise and fall of Mahoganny...

True. I think people just love slandering those theyre jealous of !

on a different note, i was eondering why alotof books still describe Louis XVI as fat and homely as a youth . Where are they getting this from??? Do they not take a look at the pictures and notic how far off they are ?
does anyone know why ?
