I would love to go and "visit" the 18th Century, to really see how things were and to get a chance to wear some of the fabulous dresses/gowns etc.....I'm not sure I'd want to stay there permanently though!! :angel1:

One word: anesthetic.

Anyone who thinks they'd like to live in the 18th century - at any level of society - should read a description of a period breast cancer operation (for instance).

Years ago I read a book by Lawrence Durrell where he addressed those who felt animals would better be left in the wild. He described, in rather sickening detail, the steps his team went through with newly captured animals to remove various parasites, address various wounds, etc.

I think of 18th century people as being like the animals in the jungle, living with all manner of miseries and simply thinking that's the way Life was.

I can already remember the difference between going to the dentist when novocaine was inserted cold into the gums, and now being pretreated with a numbing agent (even then, the needle is pretty unpleasant). Multiply that kind of progress in reducing pain, sterility, etc. and I think one needs a very idealized view of the 18th century to believe it would (even were you one of the privileged) be preferable to live then than now.

Yes I agree. I love the looks of everything from the 18th century, it would be nice if we could combine 18th century looks with modern precision.

I agree.
I am quite an idealist when it comes to the 18th century but only because my interest in art, architecture, fashion… If I could choose I would rather live in the ancient Greece, Rome than the 18th century, at least they had some standards in medicine, hygiene… But people in the 18th century didn’t know for better, maybe the society in future will think the same about us.

I think that depends very much on the the rank in society, i would have. I certainly wouldn't like to be pour in the 18th century, but i i think i would be rather happy in the high society....

Poor suffered from starvation and hard work, aristocracy had an easygoing life. However, when an illness came they were equal in pain. Living in the XVIIIth century was not that ethereal fairy tale for rich, neither.

When you put it so truthfully I am a bit turned away. However, being the truth, it is still very attractive, as a portion of my soul would have loved to live in such a time! However, another portion would wish to stay in this peak of technological revolution we call Moderne; especially seeing as I myself have a weak immune system, and therefore, would not have survived long in such a period.
However, the dresses, and balls, company, and pasttimes, I'm quite sure, would have surely lifted my spirits, and eventually, my health.
It is a dificult question...for which portion should be the correct?
