Mistresses often ended up in a convent. It was an uncertain position; when the king tired of you or died, it was off to the nunnery. So anyone who would want to be a mistress had better be fond of the religious life!!

At least a queen was always a queen, even in death.....

That's ironic, isn't it Therese! Although, in the cases of de Pompadour and Du Barry, the first lived out her life in comfort at Versailles, and Du Barry at her several Chateaus until her sad end in the Revolution.

What's about Zoé Talon, comtesse du Cayla? Are there any information or any portait of her?

I have read that in this convent, she had got a pious life. After, she went in her castle of Louvecienne where she was an brilliant woman. She had got two lovers, but she was really in love with them.

Zoé Talon, comtesse du Cayla, by François Gérard.

Zoé du Cayla, by Henri Martin (after her death).

I am sorry, but I can't send the caricature, because it was outrageous. :?

Post mistresses
from what I understood, a mistress was a political position. it wasn't "I'm sleeping with the king" - both Louis XIV and Louis XV slept with many more women than they had mistresses. and for both, they had times when the acknowledged mistress wasn't the woman they were sleeping with (didn't Louis XV stop sleeping with Pompadour after 5 years, though she was his mistress for twenty?). it was an acknowledged position with certain duties beyond the bed chamber. so having a love affair with the king wasn't enough... you had to work for it.

Absolutely correct, and in Louis XIV's time it was quite an honour to be elected Queen's mistress and one became part of the social tissue of the court, even travelling with the Queen in the same carriage!!! Look at Mme de Maintenon, who even made it to wife!

Louis XVIII was 20 odler than her... (Il avait une vingtaine d'année de plus qu'elle, désolée je ne sais pas le dire en anglais!)

Yeah I gathered that Louis XV stopped having sex with the Pompadour way before her death and that she actually helped to supply him with other sexual partners.

Post Pompadour and Louis XV's sexual partners
I heard that version too, but I more believe the version that she simply withdrew from sexual relations with him and he found his own replacements - or rather, his valet found them for him: I just don't see cold hearted but refined pompadour going out and looking at young girls to find suitable mistresses for the king. she clearly agreed with the practice, though.

She would have had to be very secure with her position to just withdraw though - it would surely be a dangerous thing to do? ANyway I read that the Du Barry did the same thing .. found young girls for him. I suppose one wouldn't expect fidelity from such a person..
