Interesting thread - I had just been wondering yesterday what happened to Caroline and to the rest of Antoinette's brothers and sisters - what happened to Maria Amalia, for instance, who married the fourteen year old boy? how many of them were still alive when Antoinette was executed? Not Joseph, I know, and iirc not the brother who succeeded him as Emperor but many of them must have still been living.

I think Amalia went insane, but not sure.

It wasn't Maria Carolina, but Marie Antoinette had a sister, very pretty and her mother's favorite, that became ill and never married..Who was it?

Either Joanna or Josepha or both- I get them mixed up.

Josepha died because of the "petite vérole", and it is Elisabeth who was disfigured following a disease but who remained alive and who never married

Oh, Ok. Then Elisabeth became the nun. They were trying to marry her off to Louis XV, then she got the pox. I remember now.

Mme Vigée Le Brun visited her in Naples and painted her portrait during her exile after 1793. She found her very similar in some ways to her sister, there is definitely a family ressemblance. She recounts the encounter in her memoirs.

Exact baron de batz
Vigée-Lebrun liked much this meeting with Marie-Caroline, the preferred sister of Marie-Antoinette… and Naples was for her a beautiful stage of voyage. I imagine that they have much speech about Marie-Antoinette…

Indeed, Antonia and Carlotta were pretty similar. They often were dressed up the same way, too.
However, I think Carlotta always looks stronger and firmer than Antonia. This girl had a stronger temper. Antonia was sweeter.
By Vigée. It's obvious, the sisters looks alike... and though...
Anyway, Carlotta just adored her little sister, who was 3 years yonger. She protected her, just as a little mother. She nearly lost her mind when she heard about her execution. She took her children with her, and made them promise that they would revenge their aunt.

There was also Marianne, the eldest of the Archduchesses. She was unmarried too.
