You could never know, because she wore numerous number of wigs and powdered her hair.

Quote: how long was marie antoinette's hair...i know that she cut it a couple of times......
Indeed, she had to, for she lost a lot of it. Was it due to hormonal changes after her pregancy ? Was it due to those terrible poufs and wigs that damaged it ?
You can see how long her hair actually is on her portraits. Look at my avatar, for instance. Marie Antoinette's hair was rather short (in French, we call this "un carré long" ), with longer hair behind, that would cascade on her shoulders. This is the "à l'enfant" hairdo. I just love it !

This is a somewhat macabre question but does anyone know what happened to Antoinette's hair after it was hacked off preparatory to her guillotining? Was it simply discarded or did Rosalie perhaps gather it and keep it? Or the barber?

Sanson cut Marie Antoinette's hair and put it in his pocket so that no one could use it as relics.

Hmmm .. so is it not known what happened to it after that? He seems to have been a most unpleasant man - might he not have tried to sell it or something?

Never read anything about it, dear... Maybe he did, indeed... Anyway, so many purpoted locks of Marie Antoinette were sold during the restauration ! It was a rage ! We also have pieces of her dresses, shoes she lost somewhere...
However, they had true locks of Antoinette when they had Louis XVII's heart analysed. These came from Vienna, where Antoinette had long ago sent them to her mother. It is true she mentions this in a letter. She sends locks of her daughter, of her husband and hers. "The most brown are mine", she writes... So, she was not as blond as la Dunst, definitely !

I don't know ! From time to time, you can find those locks for sale, I guess... They belong to rich and famous collectors...

I confess that I just don't like those styles - the powder makes the hair look grey - I didn't realise it WAS powder till someone told me so always wondered why these people all had hair that was such a funny colour - and that makes them look much older than they actually are.
Wonder what MA would make of today's fashionable hairstyles for women?

Marie Antoinette was the greatest french queen..Her hair was made by her personal hairdresser every morning.. And afternoon and for parties at night.. I like her extravagance..
