Post Perfume still lingering in Versailles?
This is probably a really strange thing to post, but who of you that have been to Versailles remember what it smelt like inside the palace?

When I went in 2000 I distinctly remembered, so much so that I still remember this musty smell, but it wasn't just of old furniture and materials, but of something more like stale perfume. I can't explain maybe someone can relate!?
That memory triggered from what I read in Fraser's The Journey about how perfume or flowers were used to such excess in the palace that some visitors remarked on how over-powering it was. The fact that the flowers and perfume smell is still possibly lingering 300 years later is pretty amazing. And it just makes me think how 300 years isn't that long at all if Marie Antoinette's own perfume can still be smelt.

I'd be fairly sceptical as to whether it actually WAS her perfume or even perfume from that era - two or three centuries is a long time and there must have been a lot of visitors to the place since ... many of them extremely highly perfumed ;). Not that I am trying to be a wet blanket or anything.

I think it is entirely plausible that some scent of Marie Antoinette still lingers at Versialles, even if it is not very detectible.

I really don't think that it IS true and don't see any reason how it could be but at the same time I don't think it would be creepy if people DID want to smell her scent :)

I agree Moose....

When I am in Versailles and it is even more true when I am in Trianon, I have impression to be in the Marie-Antoinette's place, to be where she was, where she went and spoke… thus if I push a little more my imagination, I feel her… but it is purely subjective :D

ohh i'd wouldnt even be thinking of the smell if i ever got to go to versaille. I'd just be in a gaze of just thinking i'm standing where marie antoinette was and i walked on the same floors and seen alot of the artwork she could have seen. :)

Well I know that you can still buy the "Queen's perfume" (for a price) at Versailles, I believe. Maybe an enthusiastic caretaker spritzes the place here and there every once and a while?

It's described as "intensely floral." How perfect.

I got the picture from the BBC article on the subject.

You can read it here:

I know this is kind of off topic but... I remember reading somewhere that aristocrats who survived the revolution recalled how Versailles usually smelled of urine (at least in the private chamber areas) due to the chamber pots being emptied! Also one remembers how infrequently they bathed back then; thank goodnes for perfume, eh?

And i dont remember if this was talked about but i think people visiting versailles used to say that it was dirty from all the animals there and people around them and that it stunk really bad from other things besides the chamberpots.
