Post Marie Antoinette and the Comte d'Artois.
What exactly was the Queen's relationship with her brother-in-law? Was it any deeper than being close companions? Also, do you think that the Comte used her friendship to advance himself in any way? It seems that he was a 'corrupting force' on the naive Austrian princess, going about town gambling, dancing, etc. Just curious... :?

I know that the Comte d'Artois was the favorite brother of Marie-Antoinette, because he amused her very much by his jokes and his activities. Artois liked the jokings, and he went wtih Marie-ANtoinette to the horse-races... thing which was not appreciated of the people. :?

But he was not interested as much by the throne than his Provence brother, therefore I don't think that he wanted to use Marie-Antoinette.

On the other hand during the revolution, Marie-Antoinette was aggravated by Artois who was dangerous in exile with his contre-revolution projects which were dangerous for the royal family.

Yes, Louis-Charles, you are exactly right about everything. Marie-Antoinette found Artois amusing and he shared her love of refurbishing gardens and small houses. He had his own "Trianon" called the "Bagatelle." He had exquisite taste. Louis XVI even suggested that his brother dance with the queen and escort her to the Paris opera when he himself was either too busy or not inclined. Sadly, this led to Artois being the man usually portrayed in the pamphlets as Antoinette's lover.

Antoinette did not always approve of Charles, and was known to try to protect young ladies from his seductions, such Louise de Polastron. However, he was politically conservative in contrast to Provence and Orleans, and so she made a concerted effort to ally herself with him by promising Madame Royale in marriage to Artois' oldest son, Angouleme.

Thank you for your quick responses. I suppose, then, the Comte d'Artois was not as conniving as I thought.

Yes, Therese, he did have excellant taste (as the Bagatelle shows.) I personally love the Petit Trianon, hameau, the queen's dairy, and all of these little follies of the aristocracy, their furnishings, decor, gardens, etc.

Thank you both again! :D

You are welcome, Louis XVI!! The problem with Artois is that he gave himself credit for being more devious than he actually was, and his childish schemes only served to get him into trouble.

He and Provence both eventually sat on the throne themselves, didn't they? Or at least unless I am much mistaken. That is a period of French history which I know very little about though.

Yes, Provence became Louis XVIII and Artois became Charles X.

Given the political and social instability of the immediately post revolution era, I would have thought that they would be distinctly uneasy in the position ;). Still, it was what Provence always wanted I guess.. wonder if he considered it worth it.

Hmm really, Artois was her favourite brother ? I thought i had read somewhere that Marie Antoinette had written that after getting to know all 3 brothers, she prefered her husband above the rest. maybe i am wrong....

Yes you're right oceane, Marie-Antoinette said that indeed, but she said that to her mother I believe...
But it's with Artois that she had more fun :D

Yes, she did say that. She meant that of all three brothers, Louis-Auguste made the best husband.
