I have history teacher who's the same way. He believes whatever he hears. It's a tough situation when you know your teacher's saying incorrect things; it made me question a lot of what I'd learned from that teacher. I corrected him once but he said I was wrong, so I haven't done it since.

A lot of people still think MA said that. It's a shame since it's not true, but people believe what they want to believe, and some people really don't care if it's true.

Funny, last year I had a similar experience when we had to pick a European historical figure to write our term papers on. My teacher expressly forbid me to do a paper on MA (who of course was my first choice) because he said that she supposedly made no lasting contributions to European history, except for maybe fashion which wasn't important anyways. I was outraged. Of course she made contributions! And fashion is actually important to society in my opinion. But he wouldn't allow me to write about MA so i had to do Mary Queen of Scots instead. I hate it when people are misinformed.

He really had no right to do that. First of all, there are people that have made negative contributions to Europe, no? I bet they let someone do a paper on Hitler, didn't they? Now of course MA didn't make any negative contributions but this would seem to make sense from his standpoint.

Oh believe me, there was no shortage of people who wanted to write papers on Hitler. Will MA never be truly understood and appreciated?

I think we should have an MA convention! Or maybe write an essay and send it to the New York Times or something.

A Marie Antoinette convention! oh that would be divine. But as for the New York Times article, alas, it would never work. The Times is a very liberal paper, and if it published an article that *gasp* portrayed MA as a kind and caring individual rather than a spoiled and privileged royal, lots of readers would probably be outraged. So they wouldn't do that. Even today people still hate the Tories! Maybe I took your suggestions too literally, but I too truly wish that there was a way to clear MA's name once and for all! I personally would write a novel about her, since writing's my forte, being historically accurate with none of that Fersen affair nonsense, and try to raise awareness that way. Of course there are already very good novels about the Queen out there (i.e. Vidal's Trianon) but I had never heard of them until I joined this forum! And the bad ones (i.e. Abundance) I was able to get my hands on simply by going to Borders. It was out on display because it got all those stellar reviews *grumble grumble*

Yes very grumble-worthy... but we should have a magnificent fete to celebrate her birthday, or her name-day, or whatever she would have celebrated! Marie-Antoinette Awareness Day!
