I read that too. Actually, I have contradictory informations about this ! On the one hand, I also read women could use some kind of slip for these specific periodes, indeed, in order to maintain their pieces of linen. On the other hand, I read that they just rolled their shirts... which seems to be confirmed by Rosalie's testimony about Marie Antoinette on her last morning.

I have heard that woman used to use sea sponges as tampons...
And women would use rags that they would wash out every day
i heard the rag thing when I was reading about the Victorian era, and the sea sponge thing from I completly forget where...
But I don't know where they would put the rag in the 1700s
the slip sounds reasonable I guess.
It's too bad there's so little information about this, I've been wondering what women used to do for a long time.
But of course, it's always been a very taboo thing.

In the same way that tampons are used as tampons I guess ;).

Using a rolled up shirt sounds really rather impractical but Rosalie DID say something about a stained chemise on the morning of MA's execution, didn't she?

Just wondering didn't they use some kinda undergarmets when they went riding? If so wouldn't that work as well as pants to hold a pad in place?

Good point !

From this article, we can read that the "petite culotte", feminine underwear, appeared in France during the Renaissance. Then this fashion was droped for a while, and came back again in XVIIIth century because of these dresses women wore under the Directoire periode, that were open and showed a part of their legs.

So, I guess that, since these "petites culottes" were invented, women could use them on specific occasions, such as their period or when riding, indeed. But it is only speculations...

LOL

I can't see how they would have been close fitting enough to enable somehting to stay in place anyway. Maybe they had a belt system like was in use in the early 20th century though.

I meant "petite culotte", that is a small underwear that we also call "slip", underants or panties in English, I think.

This one belongs to Madonna but clearly illustrates what I mean !
