hi, CrY ! You could add clever and cultivated, too. I knew a lot about mechanical sciences, was interested in enlightments, and fond of geography. He was so good at that that he could draw cards ! He spoke English, too, read a lot, was interested in history and latin. He read Tacitus and Livius !
Unfortunately, he wasn't gifted for talking to people and caring for his image. He was no leader...

 a gifted man
Louis XVI was a gifted man who kept a portrait of Erasmus in his library, was an amateur cartographer, and brilliant geographer. He loved Shakespeare and knew passages from Racine by heart. He was an unequalled horseman and hunter. He had a well built physique due to frequent exercise, especially his hobby of being a locksmith. He was devoted to his queen but had a mind of his own and did what he thought best for his people.

 Re: a gifted man
King Louis XVI would give a good aristocrat, living his life quittly in his château in the Loire, whit his lovely wife and children...
But, as King of France, he was not cable to rule a country. Louis wasn't, firstly, to become King. His father, died when Louis was 9 years old, and before his dead he was only second of the royal line.
And what if Marie Antoinette would been the Queen regnant? She probably could prevented the Revolution, calling loyal armies to Paris, and repressing the liberals...
For that, I voted: « good and generous, ready to sacrifice his life for his people (he was called Louis the good man for his simplicity!!»

Yes, I agree, he was ready to sacrifice his life, and did so!! When Louis was a small boy, his father Louis the Dauphin took him and his brother Provence to see the baptismal registry at the parish church at Versailles. He showed them their name enrolled with that of the humblest peasant child. "You see, my dears, when it comes to religion, all distinctions vanish....In the eyes of men, you will be greater than this humble child, but if he should have better morals than either of you, then he will be greater in the eyes of God." Their father also took the boys to see peasant cottages, which made a big impression on young Louis-Auguste.
Louis was a king whose mistake was that he would not fire upon his own people.

The duc d'Orleans voted his death! They were from the same family! He only wanted power, he was like the Comte de Provence, even if the Duc was worst!
I think that England, Austria, Prussia, Spain, Portugal and Russia were to slow! They didn't save the Royal family. They only get into war when they've seen their interests damaged!!
Marie Antoinette was, an austrian citizan and, when the Monarchy was abolished, she was again an austrian Archduchess! Austria should not let any country kill an austrian citizan!!! They should invade the country with more troops, and earlier!
I only can imagine the suffer of Madame Gabrielle de Polignac, when she knew that Louis XVI and that the Queen were dead!!
The world that she knew was over!

You are right, Jules ! Austria was awful to Marie-Antoinette ! Later, when in troubles, Marie-Caroline was not allowed in Vienna ! They had no love at all, no respect, even no sign of humanity for their archduchesses !

When you think of it, it is REALLY unbelievable how she was abandoned and murdered.

So we can conclude that the Austrian Empire ignored the homicide of an austrian Archduchess!

They had had so many archduchesses ! Serving for concluding political alliances. What would be the use of these archduchesses, if not this ?

Leopold said: " I have a sister in France, but France is not my sister!"
This sentence says all.

Leopold wasn't Marie Antoinette's best brother! I understand why did she liked more Caroline!
