Hmm I wonder if the city of Paris offers some sort of "Season Pass" to these sorts of locations. Maybe we could suggest some sort of Antoinette package?

Ha, I imagine I'll be frequenting all of these sites rather heavily next year.

Well Sophie and Louis Joseph died before the Revolution so wouldn't they have been buried near Versailles?

It's possible indeed Monsieur Andre...but they could be transferred to Saint Denis under the Louis XVIII's restoration, like for Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette

Their remains are in the "ossarium" (if that's the right word) in the crypt of Saint Denis but I believe that the first dauphin's grave may have been saccaged by the rioters during the revolution;, so who knows if they are the same bones? There is an inscription clearly mentioning their names on the wall of that part of the crypt. Its' in little recess in the left hand side part of the crypt as you enter. I believe this part was established during the restoration after 1815. On the right hand side of the cyypt are the coffins of "mesdames soeurs du roi Louis XV" amongst others on small trellis tables, behind a wrought iron grill.

On the 21 Jan 1793 at 10.00 am Louis was executect. On the 16 Octoner 1793 at 12-15 MA was executed. The kings body was taken to a new burual ground close to the Revolution square at La Madeleine where it was dumped in a single open grave and believed not to be in a coffin. After MA execution she was taken to the same place, however it was lunch time, her body and head were left on the grass verge and again there was no coffin for her. MA was buried next to her husband with her head placed between her legs. Further down there were two other mass open graves, one for the Swiss guards and the other for the other members executed during that time amounting to nearly two thousand eight hundred people. One Interesting point is that a wax death mask was takem at the site by an art student Marie Tussaud The Wax Works Woman )

A royalist purchased the site by the name of Pierre Descloceaux, who planted two weeping williows and a cyprus tree on the grave to mark the site and built a wall around the garden . At the restoration of the Bourbons The King set about looking for his older brother and sister in law. Descloceaux came foward in 1814 and gave the location and land to the king. On January 21st 1815 the bodies of Louis XVI and MA were exhumed. The kings body only had a few bones reamining and the skull was missing, he was recognised by some of the fabric he wore at the execuation.. As for MA, when her grave was opend there was a gray mass and part of a skull including the jaw. This mass contained her head band that she wore and two garters in blue and the mass was encased by a corset with metal stays which interestingly was perfect. The items found were recognised as her prporty and for some reason un known the part of the skull went missing. The two remains were taken and placed the the Royal burial ground at St Denis after being found.

IPeriodically they do open the grave OF MA and it is for some religious atoinment of expiation for the French people. The body that is in the grave has to be a replica of what MA looked like to allow this to happen. The large majoity of documents at the time, confirm this as to what was found. However I have read and have not got the reference for it that the Man who exhumed MA body wrote that it was complete, Sadly I can not find that to quote here. I have only see that once.

I Trust this has thrown a little light on to why MA grave is opened periodically
