Actually, we don't know precisely how tall Marie Antoinette was. This matter has been discussed here.

Madame Lever once said on tv that Marie Antoinette was 1,75m, which is very tall. Another specialist, also on tv, said she was 1,61m, which is rather small ! I guess the truth must be somewhere between, but where ?

Contemporaries testimonies say that Marie Antoinette was either "tall" or "middle height". But we must take into consideration that XVIIIth century people were smaller than we now are. Women usually were smaller than 1,50m, which is extremely small compared to our nowadays criters.

In my opinion, after all that I have read, Marie Antoinette was not that tall, even for XVIIIth century people. She was a woman a middle height, but her carriage, her dignity, her high heels, her long neck and her magnificent hairdoes made her look much taller than she actually was.

Thanks to the both of you!! :D I'm American so we usually measure in terms of 5'6, 5'7, etc. I looked it up, and 1.70m would be about 5 feet 7 inches tall.

Yes, 1.75m would be very tall! And back then people were shorter, you're right. So that must've been incredibly tall! 1.61m is between 5'3 and 5'4 which would be pretty average for today, but not tall at all.

Because I'm so fascinated by her, I thought that in knowing her height I could picture her better - and she'd seem more real. Thanks to you guys, I'll be sure to do some research on it. But I guess we shall never know for sure!

Thank you for giving conversions in American measures ! I didn't know how to use them... Now, I'll try to remember.

There is something more than just height, you know. Some people are tall and actually don't look so. On the other hand, some small people look taller than they are.

As far as Marie Antoinette is concerned, her noble carriage was more important than her actual height, I guess. I am pretty sure she looked taller than she actually was.

Wasn't she the queen, after all ? :D The more radiant lady of the kingdom ? :D The more beautiful woman of... the world ? :D

You're welcome! I'm not very good it at myself, but I try. So I'm about her height, between 5'6 and 5'7.

Yes, I'm sure she did look taller than she was! You can especially see it in the picture of her standing with both her children at her side. I wonder if Louis XVI was short. He probably looked shorter than her, even if he was taller!!

And yes, she carried herself very well. She had a very regal quality about her - not just in height, but in personality. Something that was sadly misjudged by many.

She had an amazing posture, by the way. :D

On the contrary, dear, Louis was very tall. The estimations very between 1m70 and 1m93... which would be extremely tall, for this period, almost a giant !

One thing is certain : Louis XVI was very tall. Maybe it's the reason why his wife enjoyed so much huge poufs ?

1.93m would be huge! 6'4 by our measurements, so today that might be the equivalent of about 7 feet tall!! WOW. That's huge.
