214 years ago, Marie Antoinette was executed by the French revolution. Let's think of her... :(

Yes, today is the anniversary date of Marie Antoinette's execution - when she was bound and carted to the scaffold, scorned by her former subjects and then beheaded in a public execution.

Thinking of Her and the awful fate she met on this date in 1793, I thought of the words of 19th c. English novelist Charles Dickens when he wrote of her execution in the Tale of Two Cities:

"Now, breaking the unnatural silence of a whole city, the executioner
showed the people the head of the king- and now, it seemed almost in
the same breath, the head of his fair wife which had had eight weary
months of imprisoned widowhood and misery, to turn it grey.

I quoted this passage and others from Dickens in three Oct. 16, 2007 posts to my yahoo MA group. In his elegant prose, Dickens, for me, well tells the incredible journey Marie Antoinette traveled from the pinnacle of European society to the tumbril and guillotine. LINK:

I was reminded of this day this morning as I was reading "Washington Post Express". :(
EM Vidal has an excerpt from her novel on her blog today. [/i]

 A terrible day... As I said in another thread, It's simply wonderful that after almost two centuries there are so many people who still care for Marie Antoinette and desire to learn her story. Many people who haven't read anything about her, assume that she was a mean and terrible person. But there are so many people who read the story and are left in utter confusion, amazement and awe.

When i finished reading about her trial in her biography by Antoina Fraser, I thought there would be some sort of good part of the story coming up. I was shocked to discover that the reasons she was condemned to die, were either false or simply out of hatred for her. Very frustrating passage to read. :(

Soon, however, it will be her birthday and we can celebrate her life more happily than now =D

Post Re: October 16th
Unfortunately, this day is also my birthday which is what piqued my interest in her. So on this day, I wear a red ribbon around my neck (which I've heard some do in Paris, and apparently they gather in Place de la Concorde on this day) to remember.
