I think they did feel some form of love for each other at the end. They seemed to care about each other. Frankly, I think Louis and Antoinette had a good marriage, as far as arranged royal marriages went.

Ok, I really think that Louis fell in love with his wife. I don't know if she was ever madly in love with him, but she stayed ay his side even when it meant her death. He begged her to leave the summer of 1789 and she replied, "I will die at your feet with the children in my arms." That, to me, is the kind of love that matters, more than physical attraction that often comes and goes. Also, Antoinette showed a playfulness with Louis, such as when she came to his study, dressed like a nun, because otherwise he was too busy to see her. He did not recognize her, until she started laughing so hard. That sort of playfulness very much characterizes their relationship. And when Louis had his hair fixed like a lady's because Antoinette was wearing hers like a man. He did not like it, but instead of complaining he teased her by showing up in her room wearing a chignon. The queen was seen to ride very hard in order to keep up with the king while hunting. They were friends, they became lovers, it was sometimes tender, sometimes they quarrelled and avoided each other. Just like any marriage.... But when there was death or sickness or danger - they were always there for each other. And that to me is real love....

My dear, I could not AGREE MORE..or have said it better!

I don't know if "lovers" is the right word but I agree as well.

Yes, I quite agree...
Well, I think it's quite hard to speak about love (as we intend it today) about people who had arranged marriages; today we think love means that you meet a person and freely decide you want to be with him/her the whole life. Louis an MA didn't have such choice. But I think theirs was quite a good marriage after all. Of course they cared for each other, and their charachters were not so different as it could seem at a first glance. They both cared about their family and dedicated a great attention to their children; and, yes, in a way I think they loved each other, even if it wasn't that kind of passionate, romantic love we are used to thinking of. It was the love of a two persons who had spent their lives together, who had gone toghether through a lot of difficulties, who had discovered to get on well even if with some ups and downs, and had shared a real familiar intimacy, unlike other royal couples who practically lead separeted lives.

I didn't select any one of the options because I felt that they loved each other but were not in love with each other.

I've just read some of Rosalie Lamorliere's (sp?) memoirs. She mentions and notes quite clearly the locket of King Louis' picture the Queen hid during her confinement with a lock of his hair in it.

She nurtured it and made care to keep it hidden.

Sounds like love to me. Sweet, dear love.

Aww! That is very touching... It was hard for her to lose him.
