Did Madame Du Barry have a lisp?
I am reading Castelot's book on Marie Antoinette. Apparently Madame Du Barry had a lisp. Is this true?

I've heard(/read) that too. I think I read it in Joan Haslip's "Madame Du Barry: The Wages of Beauty", but I believe I've heard it elsewhere too... Whether it is actually true or just what some writers have read by some other writers I don't know. Maybe someone else knows?

Re: Did Madame Du Barry have a lisp?
I happened to come to a section in Weber's 'Queen of Fashion' that the Du Barry was said to have a lisp and used baby talk. The source cited was Campan, so it's hard to know if she had a bias against her.

I read it from Castelot's book so I don't think Castelot had a bias.

I read it from Seward's biography. Madame du Barry probably had a "Lithp".

Re: Did Madame Du Barry have a lisp?
Three references are starting to make this more definitive - unless they all cite the same primary source!

Re: Did Madame Du Barry have a lisp?
It's indeed more definite, but then many authors tell untrue things about Antoinette and Louis - if you know what I mean (?)... But I guess there would be no reason to lie about Du Barry having a lisp, so it might very well be true.

I hate to say it, but I have a soft spot for Du Barry. I don't know why I am so sympathetic ( or just "pathetic" ), but I am. She was very attractive, as well!

I've always kind of liked her too. Even though Antoinette and Du Barry had their differences and argues. I especially like her eyes.

Yes, she was said to have bewitching violet eyes. I cannot sympathize too greatly with the du Barry as she and her anti-choiseulistes did much to harm the reputation of Antoinette. It was not till many, many years later in dire circumstances did she rally to Antoinette's cause.

Re: Did Madame Du Barry have a lisp?
Really? Violet eyes? I wonder how a person can violet eyes and if so how rare or common it is. I'll have to look that one up! I also agree with Delicate Fleur. I cannot say I'm too keen as to how Mme Du Barry treated Marie Antoinette in her youth, however in a more critical situation and increasingly barbarity the past friction between them almost seems petty.

Yes, these violet eyes are mentioned in "Queen of Fashion". Wikipedia notes that: Quote: The appearance of violet eyes is thought to occur from the mixing of red and blue reflections. Some albinos have eyes that appear violet. Violet eyes are either a form of blue eyes or a mutation.

Thank You! That is extremely interesting, I find genetics interesting. I think one of Marie Antoinette's sisters may have had violet eyes also, I'm not quite sure.

It was Elizabeth that had the violet eyes. though no one probably ever saw them because she was always veiled due to her pock marks from small pox.
