Hello!

I know about this book in English:
http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Marie-Ant ... 856&sr=1-4

Does anyone know if this 2004 French edition of her letters (in 2 books) is a valid one?
http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_ss_b/402- ... antoinette

Thank you!

Indeed, it is a very interesting collection (but rather expensive...). Unfortunately, thre are no footnotes and no comments. But on the other hand, there are letters that were not published by Evelyne Lever (authentic ones, such as to Madame de Fitz James).

Here's the details for the other two:

Editions Paléo also offers a two volumes edition of Madame de Tourzel's memoirs:

Their complete catalogue is very interesting:

Olivier Bernier published Marie Antoinette's correspondence with Maria Theresa - "Imperial Mother, Royal Daughter" I think it's called. I've been searching for this book, but unfortunately to no avail.

Does anyone happen to know if Imperial Mother, Royal Daughter and Secrets of Marie Antoinette both by Olivier Bernier are in fact the same book or are they different from one another??

Also, mentioned in another post was Madame de la Tour du Pin's Memoirs, which I have a few different versions of. Can anyone please suggest which is the best to read as well as any other memoirs of the time that may be of relevance (and printed in English)??

I don't know wether the two books by O. Bernier are the same, I only know Imperial Mother, Royal daughter. As for memoires, Mme Campan's are very interesting; I'm reading that book and you can find a lot of information there, and explanation of the court by a person who was near the queen.

Thanks, Rosalie. I've actually just finished reading Madame Campan's Memoirs - well at least the main part on Marie Antoinette, and I am just finishing up the Historical Illustration on the court of Louis XV. I really enjoyed them. I liked her style of writing and her attachment to Marie Antoinette was very touching. I found the insight she shared and the anecdotes she related to her time with Marie Antoinette really invaluable in gaining a new understanding of Marie Antoinette's life, and Madame Campan also mounted an extraordinary defense of most, if not all, ills ever leveled against Marie Antoinette.

I have ordered Bernier's Imperial Mother, Royal Daughter along with Mercy d'Argenteau's correspondence with Maria Theresa from 1770 to 1780 (entitled Guardian of Marie Antoinette). I thought they would be good to read together. The early part of Marie Antoinette's reign, especially as Dauphine seemed really magical. Sure, there were down sides to it and certain aspects that took a lot of getting used to, but I can't help but feel she came through them in brilliant style up until the few years before the Revolution when misfortune was inescapable. I recently saw Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette film and had very mixed feelings about it. I did think it a very ambitious attempt and the setting and costumes were top rate. Where I thought it failed was by trying to encapsulate her entire life in France into two hours. The onset of the Revolution, the storming of Bastille, and the invasion of Versailles all happened in the course of like 20 minutes, and I think that did a huge disservice to those pinnacle events of her life. Not to mention the fact the entire Diamond Necklace Affair and a whole child were left completely disregarded. I found some of the character portrayals completely wrong - especially the Duchesse de Polignac - who came off as being completely vapid. I have to admit though, the masquerade ball scene where Hong Kong Garden was played was amazing.

Sorry for the ramble.

Yes, it's good to read the letters by Mercy together with the ones between MA and her mother! It gives you a full insight into the situation at Versailles and outside at that time. I began to read Imperial Mother, Royal Daughter in the library some days ago and also Mme Campan's memoires. I decided to devote one free day to researches about MA...ah, wonderful! :D
I perfectly agree with you about the movie: one can't cut so many events, especially in the second part of MA' s life. Maybe, as Sofia Coppola was interested above all in MA's youth, it would have better to stop the movie before, and concentrate only on that period...even if I know it's maybe difficult to put into effect. And I also agree about Mme de Polignac: whatever one thinks about her, she was famous for having a sweet and submissive look, she wasn't that excessively brilliant, sparkling, chatting woman!
