Post A detailed analyzation of Marie Antoinette's portrait 1778
I am curious as which fabrics that this dress was specifically made of. Such as grey tafetta. Does anyone know if this dress is a Robe a la Francais? I have come to that conclusion anyway. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. :)

Sincerely,

I would love to make a replication of this dress. :) So the bodice is silver silk, and the skirt and back is grey taffeta, it's an interesting mix, I wonder if it would work out in real life. I assumed it was taffeta because it shines the most light and changes colors, so I think it is. Perhaps someone else could confirm it. *shrugs*

confusing because taffeta and silk both change with the light, well some times, it seems like alot of work!

Taffeta to me seems to have more a metallic glint to it versus normal silk well at least I think it is present in. Or maybe the sellers are shining in a different light. However compared to normal silk taffeta seems to have the most glean. I'm beginning to think the Bodice is taffeta again! Blast! I'm confused even more!

Actually this style of dress is not a Robe a la francaise but a robe de cour or court dress, which was worn at extremely formal court occasions. It was characterized by much larger paniers than were worn for normal day wear and a train which was tied elaborately at the back. This is one of my favorite styles of dress of the 18th century.

As for the fabric, I would say it is definitely some sort of changeable white/grey silk taffeta.

isnt this the robe de cour made in the style of a robe francaise?
it matches the silk upholstry on the furniture of the fontainebleau boudoir.

It is also one of my favourite styles, Monsieur André. Not the quintessence of comfort but...so beautiful!!! :D
