Post Louis XVI and Marquis de Sade
It wasn't until 1778 when Marquis de Sade was arrested for such monstrous things. For example in 1768 when he was arrested for beating a maid. And his wife came to his defense, why don't you think Louis XV didn't have him imprisoned longer? What did Louis XVI think of the Marquis de Sade?

Post Re: Louis XVI and Marquis de Sade
First I would like to know who Marquis de Sade was really.
I know about his perverse writings but I haven’t read them.
I have read somewhere that he was imprisoned in Bastille and set free during the fall of Bastille. :?:

Thank you for opening this topic Hellou,
I would like to know some facts about this notorious man.

Post Re: Louis XVI and Marquis de Sade
Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, Marquis de Sade (June 2, 1740 – December 2, 1814) (pronounced IPA: [maʁki dəsad]) was a French aristocrat, French revolutionary and writer of philosophy-laden and often violent pornography. He was a philosopher of extreme freedom (or at least licentiousness), unrestrained by morality, religion or law, with the pursuit of personal pleasure being the highest principle. Sade was incarcerated in various prisons and in an insane asylum for about 32 years of his life; eleven years in Paris (10 of which were spent in the Bastille) a month in Conciergerie, 2 years in a fortress, a year in Madelonnettes, 3 years in Bicêtre, a year in Sainte-Pélagie, and 13 years in the Charenton insane asylum. Much of his writing was done during his imprisonment. The term "sadism" is derived from his name.

The Marquis de Sade was what today we would call a sexual predator. He preyed upon the helpless, especially women and children. King Louis XVI had him imprisoned in the Bastille.

People in literary circles talk about how liberated he was, and how he wrote sexuality so well....I just see him as perverse, violent and strange. I'm all for people doing their own "thing" in the bedroom, but as Therese mentions, he was not sexually liberated he was a predator.

Exactly! People can do what they want as long as they don't harm others

Has anybody read his writings?
I’ve heard that he wrote so perverse and sick things, far from the normal eroticism in the literature that kind.

I took his books in my hands twice since I was very curious. First time, I opened one page and there it was! A priest was sexually abusing an innocent girl. I closed the book and took it back to the shelf. The book is called Justine, Les Infortunes de la Vertu.
Second time I took the book La Philosophie dans le Boudoir. I opened a page again and some guy was telling "ultra-perverse" things to a certain lady. Completely shocked with the vocabulary used in the book, I closed it and took it back although I was thinking about reading it finally. But I was too afraid to bring that book home.
Anyway, his works are being revaluated nowadays and he's being considered as one of the radical adherents of libertinism. I really can't tell until I read some of his works. I don't know when will I encourage to do it...

Were your hands smoking when you took that book back to the shelf?
