 So who was guillotined? Apologies in advance if this is a morbid topic  but I realised yesterday that there are some key members of the royal household whose fates I do not know. Who was guillotined and who escaped? Someone just confirmed for me that Elisabeth went to the guillotine.. what of Clothilde? Madame du Barry lost her head. The Princess de Lambelle lost hers too although at the hands of a mob, not the guillotine. The Mesdames escaped didn't they? IIRC Axel de Fersen was killed by a mob some years later. What happened to the Comtesse Jules? What happened to Madame Campan and her husband? I presume that she lived as she survived to write her memoirs .. where did they go?

Mme Campan escaped, which has been stated only due to the fall of Robespierre. She lived in the end of her life at Mantes and died in 1822. Her Memoires sur la Vie privee de la Reine Marie-Antoinette published the year after her death. Of course, Madame Royale survived and her story is very much worthy of further reading.

1802.. she didn't have a very long life then, even by the standards of the day (though longer than her unfortunate brother and sister in law).

mesdames tantes I read in a book about Robespierre that the two surviving Mesdames tantes were caught when they tried to flee to Rome and were guillotined in 1793. surprisingly, Robespierre spoke against their execution.

I never heard of their being caught....are you sure of your information? I thought they died a natural death.

certainty? Not completely - the article in which I read it was a defense of Robespierre, and the issue was raised just to show he was more humane than his adversaries (debatable). I have not seen other references. can anyone else help?

Um, I am fairly sure that that's incorrect - as far as I am aware they escaped to Naples and were given sanctuary by Antoinette's sister Caroline.

I wish that marie antoinette didnt get her head choped off I mean she did not diserve it she was a nice and buetifull woman.I mean her friends problilly one of her friends escaped I think it was sohie and one of them had there head chopped off.

There is a website with a list of people who died during the revolution, it is in alphabetical order so it is easy to search for names. http://les.guillotines.free.fr/ It also says how they died...

- ....... I will look into Chimay, I had always thought she lived... As far as Mesdame Tantes, they lived out their days in Italy. So they were NOT guillotined.
