Post Marie or Antoinette?
I was just wondering, does anyone know what Antoinette's friends called her in person, say at the petit trianon?

It wouldn't have been formal such as 'your majesty' as it was for those outside her circle or would it have?

I always wonder if she had a nickname from them that has not been recorded in history!

I do not now if she had nickname, but I'm sure she was called rather Antoinette than Marie, because all of her sisters had the name "Marie" for religious respect.

That's it, precisely, Anouk ! :D Our queen was called "Antoinette", or even "Antoine", "Madame Antoine" when she was in Vienna. She would later sign her letters to her mother "Antoinette".

I was just wondering who decided to change her name to Antoinette?

Non one changed her name. She was called Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna (and even possibly Anna with all these names, but she did not signed it on her marriage act). All these Habsbourg archduchesses were called Maria, to put them under the protection of saint Marie. Her mother was Maria Theresia, her sister Maria Carlotta. Her name was italianized into "Maria Carolina", but she was called "Charlotte" and always remained Charlotte, for she signed her letters to her friend Emma Lyons "Charlotte". It is the same for her sister Antoine. She was called Antoine, more often than Antoinette, her name became "Marie Antoinette" when she had to go to France, but she still signed her letters to her mother "Antoine"... for you can see that, sometimes, she had to add "tte" !

Humm, I just finished reading What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution for the third time. The author stated that the reasono for the small change was because they felt that Antoine was to Austrian. So they added the tte to give her more of a French (and possibly something they considered more effeminate) name. Like the previous poster mentioned that's why some of her signatures would start to drop at the tte part. She wasn't used to it.

But, that's just what I read. I guess there could have been a million different reasons. :?: :)

Indeed, in French "Antoine" is a man's name. "Antoinette" is for women.

I am in the middle of reading Marie-Therese, Child of Terror: The Fate of Marie Antoinette's Daughter and if I remember correctly this is on page 13, but it states that Marie Antoinette asked that anyone visiting her at the Petit Trianon/Hameau call her Marie.

Though I have only read a few books, I never heard this either. I can't tell what source she used for it. There are 9 pages of sources, but no marks to indicate. I was wrong about the page, it's the bottom paragraph on page 12. Talking about Petit Trianon,
Quote:
It was here that the Queen , exhausted from the etiquette of the French court, banished curtsying and insisted that she be called by her first name.

(My apologizes, I left out a word. Just checked and all is exact as the author put it) Actually, for anyone who does have this book, it's the last sentence on the 12th page.

Well, her name is Antoinette. She insisted that they didn't formally address her.

I was thinking, if the author is correct and she did insist on being called by her first name, I wonder if that made those visiting her a bit uncomfortable. In the beginning at least. After years and years of not just court etiquette, but the extremely high standards of Versailles, to address the queen so informally? I imagine is might have been a bit odd.

It was standard practice for the times (in France) to be addressed and go by the second name in the sequence. Usually a person was given three names, such as Louis-Charles-Etienne de Bellecour. He would have gone by "Charles." And so it was with Antoinette. She was never called "Marie," even at the Trianon. It simply wasn't the custom.
