Yes, her death... beyond human comprehension, to even try and think about the way she died....
Yes, beautiful picture and very sad indeed. Even though it's painted long time after her death. But never mind that. Beautiful picture. Thank you for sharing, Jules de Polignac!

Post Re: opinion about Lamballe
I am currently reading The Princesse de Lamballe by Sir Francis Montefiore, Bart and have discovered some really interesting points about her. One thing which really surprised me was in 1768 after the death of Marie Leczinska, Madame Adelaide had designs of arranging a marriage between the Princesse de Lamballe and Louis XV before he fell under the spell of a new favorite. La Lamballe was, however, completely unresponsive to the King.

I also found her affiliation with freemasonry, which seemed to be quite the fad at the time, quite extraordinary. She became a member of the Loge de la Candeur on 5 February 1778. Furthermore on 20 February 1781 she is appointed Grand Mistress of the Mere Loge Ecossaise d'Adoption.

There is also an excerpt from her will which I found really touching:

''I entreat the Queen to receive a mark of gratitude from her to whom she has given the title of 'her friend'. A precious title which has formed the happiness of my life, and which I have never used except to gain her marks of attachment and proofs of my sentiments towards her person, which I have ever loved, and which sentiments I shall cherish till my last breath. I beg her, as a last favor, to accept my repeater watch to remind her of the hours we have passed together.''

I think Madame de Lamballe was a courageous and devoted but not very intelligent woman. I have the impression that the queen soon realized it and got wreary of her. That would certainly explain why she told Madame de Tourzel to answer the questions for Lamballe when they were taken away.

Hopefully not, I think she was killed by a club to the noggin. What a horrible thing to do, regardless of who it is. :(

WHat do you think about the portait? I love it, but it is also so sad :?

I would prefer if she was fully clothed and er- not dead.

Lamballe is my favorite person associated with Marie Antoinette. I have read that it was her soft manners which first attracted Marie to her. I hope that her death was a quick one.
