Post Portrait of Marie-Antoinette in Romania
Today was the first time I saw this picture. Wow, in contrast to all the others, it's very sharp and dark. http://www.ladyreading.net/marieantoine ... ie186.jpeg

It is sharp - you can recognise her features, but it is a rather strange portrait. It is kept in Romania, do you mean? Antoinette never travelled outside France after her arrival.

That is a strange portrait. Are you sure it's her? It really does look like her, but those Hapsburg features really did run in the family. Could it be one of her ancestors? The dress is distinctly 17th century, probably 1630-50. It could be a fancy dress portrait, but it's definitely an odd style of painting for the late 18th century.

You make a very good point, dear. I never seen this attributed to anyone else, so I can make neither conclusion. :help:

She reminds me on Marie Tharesia. It is an unusual portrait.

That's one of the things I also found odd was her dress. The only thing I could think of is maybe she's dresses for a play.
Here's what she says about it.
Quote:
Unkwon artist, Bruckenthal Collection, Sibiu, Romania
This strange portrait of Marie-Antoinette is kept in Romania, at the Bruckenthal Collection in Sibiu. Unfortunately I don't have any other information about it.

It's the bottom photo on this page: http://www.ladyreading.net/marieantoinette/det2-en.html

Also, I know this is silly, but I can't find the gallery here. Can someone lead me to it?

Well, the mystery deepens. On here: http://marie-antoinettequeenoffrance.blogspot.com/2008/09/family-tree-meet-maries-family-from-top.html I found the portrait cited as Marie Antoinette's grandmother, Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.

Humm, thanks for posting that!! It would make more sense if her was her grandmother, with the dress and all. It's amazing how much they look a like!!
It's one thing for siblings to look a like, but Marie Antoinette would then have the blood of 2 different men (grandfather and father) and to still come out to look just like her. :o
Again, thanks for the link, I haven't seen it before, I know where I am going to be spending most of my time tomorrow! LOL :)

I am fairly certain that portrait is of her grandmother, Empress Elisabeth Christine.

That is most definitely not Marie Antoinette.
