"Your Highness, the pesants have no bread!" you:"no bread?? Let them eat cake!!!!!!" well i could enjoy it ........lol Yes, I like that sentence. I would like to imagine what kind of a person could say something like that. It reminds me on one pope from the history lessons. He had send solders to kill the heretics in one place (In France as I recall) with the words “Kill them all and the God will recognize his”.

How awful Marija! Chou, where did you read the definite quote about Madame Victoire and 'Let them eat cake'?

 Re: Let Them Eat Cake
I've also read somewhere that it was possibly a Queen of Spain that said it once too, as well as Madame Victoire. It could have been in the Queen of Fashion book or the Marie Antoinette The Journey book. I can't imagine her ever saying that, she was too sensitive to her peoples needs (for example, she had charities set up for some groups did she not?). However, I don't mind when people say that she said it, because it gives me an opportunity to talk about her and explain to them what she was REALLY like!

 Re: Let Them Eat Cake
Madame Victoire!? ( well that I could see especially when she was young.) I had read some where and Iam sure you have too, that Marie Antoinette was actually trying to be helpful, as she said the name of a special cake that used less flour than bread, and would save flour in a bread shortage. It was that statement that was twisted in a pamphlet. I really just think the statement was an outright lie. Especially then, as today people believe what they see in print. printing was still fairly new then, a lot of people read these and so then believed horrible things about her.

 Re: Let Them Eat Cake
The English language has yet to invent such words as would describe what I think of that... Those of you who know me can imagine. It's not good.

 Re: Let Them Eat Cake
First of all, for non-French speakers, the phrase in French is "Let them eat brioche" (that is, a sweet bread). Presumably, whenever it was translated into English, English speakers were not (as many now are) familiar with this viennoiserie, and so... "cake". She certainly didn't say it, and in fact the phrase has been traced to an anecdote in Rousseau, as explained in an item on (blush) my site: http://www.chezjim.com/sundries/s15.html#42

 Re: Let Them Eat Cake
I read the following about it: book "Marie Antoinette" from Antonia Fraser Rousseau in 1737 wrote that the spanish princesse Maria Thersia said once: If they have no bread they should eat "croute" of the pie. And even the C'omte de Provence wrote in his memoires of 1823 that every time he will eat a paté on croute it will remind him of Maria Theresia an her sentence. So I definitly believe, that Marie Antoinette never ever said it. reine

 Re: Let Them Eat Cake
Wow, thank you so much for your imput guys.
I know that this statement should be in movies and TV but....oh well. Has anyone felt that in the Coppola MA movie, with the "let them eat cake" part, that theu actually made the queen look like a monster. still beautiful yes but she looked like a witch.

 Re: Let Them Eat Cake
In the Coppola movie she didn't sayt the sentence...it appear only in a scene whoch was a sort of "fantasy" imagined by the people...So in this sense the movie helped people know the snetence was never pronounced
