 The Remains of Louis XV
After the horrid mistake I made. I have found an image of the remains of Louis XVI's predecessor, Louis XV. Attachment:
Les restes de Louis VIII, exhumés de son tombeau en 1793.jpg [ 59.17 KiB | Viewed 4682 times ]

Did he die of the pox or plague?

Re: The Remains of Louis XV
He died of smallpox at the age of 64. As I read he decomposed alive.

Re: The Remains of Louis XV
Yes that did indeed happen. If he wasn't decomposing it was said that he looked like a corpse that is a horrible way to die.

Re: The Remains of Louis XV
Yes it was. Spectacular, disgusting and very very painful. I'd rather choose decapitation.

Re: The Remains of Louis XV
Ick. I remember reading a description of Louis XV's funeral in Claude Manceron's "Twilight of the Old Order." They couldn't find servants who were willing to remove the body from its deathbed so they eventually had to force some ditch-diggers to do it. Like Anouk said, he had already started decomposing while alive and the stench was so horrid they had to put him in a lead coffin inside his state coffin and even then you could still smell it. No one wanted anything to do with his body for fear of catching small pox. Tragic, disgusting, but an interesting thought... Even the king of France, at the end of it, was reduced to a corpse that his servants refused to touch. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, indeed.

Re: The Remains of Louis XV
That sounds extremely unpleasant. However that does not surprise me. Who would want to remove a corpse? It reminds me of the plague. No one wanted to pick up the bodies, but the people who did figured they might as well have some money in their pocket before they died. Did they think the lead has properties to mollify the odor of the corpse?

Re: The Remains of Louis XV
Well normally removing a corpse wasn't a particularly big deal, but small pox is so contagious and his corpse was so disgusting. The lead coffin was just because they were hoping to seal it tightly so the stench couldn't escape, but it wasn't entirely effective.
