I am sure that the small waisted dress shown a few post before must have been worn with a corset. I cannot think that her waist was that small. The only time I have seen a waist that small is in our modern runways. Those poor models!

To me that doesn't really seem like something Marie Antoinette would wear... Are you sure it isn't Russian, or maybe English?

I'm quite sure that MA wore far more than 200 dresses in her life.

They can fairly acuratly date clothing..not only by the style..but by the fabric and the way it was put together..type of thread, hand stitching, embroidery ect. I think it would be pretty hard to fake one of those gowns. historians keep track of textiles, and they are I believe, all hand stitched together.. It is spectacular... and surely fit, and made for the Queen of France. (As it is clearly not a common woman's dress...not with that train.) Versailles was looted..and it goes to reason that some of the clothing that was taken was not torn to bits..or worn by the pesants.... but was put away carefuly with it's origin..and passed down in a family untill it was returned...

I love it too! It is really great that so many of her things have made their way back to Versailles........But especially something so fragile as a dress....It must have really been kept well for the past 230 years to survive ..problems like moths, decomposure of threads stuff like that. when you see it standing like that....That is how she looked...amazing! I would love to see it in person...the same for the bonnet of Madame Royal and the shoes......Imagine owning those things in your museum quality collection.

Readers of French can get an idea of at least the colors and fabrics worn by MA and some of her court in this memoir:
Modes et usages au temps de Marie-Antoinette / par le comte de Reiset,.... Livre-journal de madame Éloffe,...

Lots of pictures, though poorly scanned.
