Post HELP ! Who's the mystery lady, with orb ??
If my link doesn't work, in my next post I'll put a link to my Flickr account. :D .

I found this large framed print at an estate sale today. Sadly, I couldn't afford the lush matching settee and chairs. I DID get some nice millinery feathers and pink lace covered shoe stretchers, tho.

This mystery lady has me stumped. I have Googled til my eyeballs hurt, but she is remaining mystery. From the age of the furniture in the room she was in, I am dating the print to about 1950- very early 1960's. When I did a quick photo, I got a big old orb. I am a complete skeptic, but somehow never get orbs unless I am photographing estates , in New Orleans, or at a certain antebellum mansion here in Alabama. So go figure about those orbs.

Does she look familiar to anyone ?

Ohh that is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
That is the Duchess of Devonshire's friend Mary Graham...Known Socially as "The Beautiful Mrs. Graham"...She and Georgiana exchanged passionate letters to each other, as well as portraits...This one is by Gainsborough. They were the closest of friends Untill Georgiana met Lady Elizabeth Foster in Bath.

You bought this at an estate sale?...incredible find..and so beautifuly framed!!!!! I wish Id had seen the settee and chairs...this person had great taste I think!

Thanks, Elle !

Yes, my print is really gorgeous. A bit faded, but still sublime. I love estate sales, this one was in a completely unremarkable house, with a dreadful kitchen, none of the rooms anything special, except that one parlor where this framed print was , with an antique settee and chairs (covered in silk), and a beautiful piano.

I had sixty bucks in my pocket, and no ATM anywhere near. This was Saturday, and Sunday was scheduled to be "half priced day". So the lady at the check out let me have the picture for half price! (38.50)

Then I went to the thrift and found 4 huge spools of vintage pale smoky blue wide satin ribbon, so I am stoked to create something awesome!

I wonder if the orb doesn't suggest the Empress of Austria or Catherine of Russia? Why would an English lady be holding an orb, unless she were masquerading as a head of state?

Yes Lady Graham had an unfortunate end. She had fallen ill and her loving husband suggested the climate of the south of France as a remedy. However she died on board ship off Hyères and when her husband hired a carriage to transfer her body back to England, this was intercepted near Toulouse by revolutionary soldiers who opened the casket and defiled the corpse ..... :(fairly typical French revolutionary behaviour wouldn't you agree?) Her husband, a former admirer of France, hated the French from that moment on.

Three weeks ago I picked up in an Amsterdam antiques fair an early 19th century miniature(1830 or so) of this Gainsboro portait of Mrs Graham and I am very very pleased with it. I paid the incredibly low price of 85 euros! Did the seller miss a zero? I will try and photo it and post it. It is signed and the intricate and unusual metallic frame is exquisite.
