Post Antoinette and a Puce color dress.
I found this via a link from a blog. The link is from Christie's Auction House. It is a fragment of one of Antoinette's dress while she was in Temple that is the famous/infamous color "puce". It also has English net lace attached to it. I hope you enjoy this as much I have/do. If you want a rough translation on the details I can help. :)

What a find :!: The material looks really well kept, like new, too bad i cant read French. What does it say about the dress? is it newly found? if so where?

Here is the original text. "Le fragment de robe en soie puce brodée de branches de jasmin, les barbes et volants en point d'Angleterre"

A rough translation through yours truly, :)

A fragment of a puce silk dress with embroidered branches of jasmine with English point lace.

Quote:
The invention of "puce" is an amusing story in itself. Every fashion in France had to have a special name and these ranged from the basic to the downright humorous (ie: dauphin's poo). The socially awkward Louis never knew how to tell his wife how to ease up on the extravagant fashions and attempted many methods that all failed. Being straightforward is always the best policy says I! One day when he walked in on the queen trying on a new dress, he attempted to discourage her with the mean humour common at court. As Caroline Weber tells, in Queen of Fashion, "When the Queen asked her husband how he liked the confection, which was made from taffeta of an odd pinkish-tan hue, he replied laconically: 'It is the color of a flea [puce].'" The plan backfired, and the queen (and everyone else with her) loved the nickname for the colour and it stuck.

Oh if only I had the money to bid on that. I'm sure the original dress ( in it's whole) must have been gorgeous

Yes, I too wish I was one of the rich and powerful of my town, however.....I just wash their laundry  Just Kidding!
I wish that when that beautiful necklace was on the market a year or so ago that I would have been able to simply see it! Imagine being thst close to something that was once Antoinette's!

"Puce" means flea. I read somewhere that the color of the flea, hence puce, came into fashion at some point.

Once I have enough time I'll whip out my copy of Queen of Fashion and post a good description of the color. :)

For those who missed it, I posted the origin just a bit above, quoted from someone else.

I read that it was Louis XVI that came up with the colour "puce" and that the description was adpoted at court. It of course means flea coloured.

Yes Monsieur Cheval You did post an excellent explanation for the origin of the colour Puce. ....and I too have longed to see an example of it. It is a beautiful colour...and would have went very well with her hair. I would also love to own the fragment of her dress. I think It also says that it was exibited at Versailles in 1955.
Wow...I hit the link to the side...http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_ ... 5f83087ea8 and came to this, a silk purse embroidered by The Queen in the Temple!!!! Look at how beautiful it is! Here they are selling the intertwined hair of Marie Antoinette and King Louis!!!!!http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_details.aspx?from=salesummary&pos=1&intObjectID=5126726&sid=20dd4988-9639-4a0b-a70f-305f83087ea8 Wow, apparently they are selling off an exibit with some very wonderful Items. If the last link does't work next to the purse pick the Item that looks like a buckle. That is their hair.
http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/lot_ ... 5f83087ea8 this link is to two minitures that can be worn on a neclace of little Louis XV11 and Madame Royale! from the same 1955 exibit. How much we have all wished to own something...or even to see some things that she owned. There is also Louis' Razor.
