Post Opera?
Opera fans: Do you think that Marie Antoinette's story would translate well into an opera? It certainly is tragic....

Somebody was trying to put together an opera, or maybe a musical, but it was in the early stages I will find the link.A lot of people said it was degrading because of the Fersen thing, they have a song about getting a little house together or something like that  . I will find the link, maybe it is finished now.

Here's a funny little find:

Quote:
Les abonnés de l'Opéra (1783-1786) Boysse, Ernest (1836-18..?), 1881

"Subscribers to the Opera (1783-1786)"

http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k1 ... pagination

Part of this book at least (I've just browsed it a bit) seems to consist of seating positions relative to the King and Queen.

Worth a gander from both opera fanatics and all you royalists out there.

UPDATE: Having downloaded and browsed it further, I see that it in fact provides min-bios of many of the subscribers, often with some idea of how things went for them in the Revolution.

I think her story would be just perfect for an opera! But it would need a very good composer, who could convey the full force of her tragic fate without falling into excesses of romance, and above all who could render the complexity of her personality...

Post Re: Opera?
Without a doubt dearest Antoinette ought to be immortalized in song.

Although we associate M.A with the Baroque period, surely only the High Romanticism of Verdi would suffice to do justice in terms of the sheer scale needed for her life story. One immediately imagines a kinship with that of La Travaita - of course not the subject matter, but the tone and plight of the opera seem to aptly fit. Ironically both woman end up alone, sacrificing personal happiness for that of other's.

She deserves to be venerated by the masses; why not through costume and voice

I think that would be a fantastic opera to see! No doubt it would be hard for the composer to capture everything without somehow offending the audience. But having said that, it's possible! Can you jsut imagine the flamboyant costumes and music?

Sorry, I didn't mean to be confusing.
I only ment to say, if the composer were to include in the opera, something of their own view (for example, if they were to make MA say "let them eat cake"), it may upset some of the audence because they have different views.

Well it would be hard to make an opera or any form of entertainment without upsetting someone..
