Post Rose of Versailles
So far I have watched 20 episodes of The Rose of Versailles. (anime/manga)

I found many inaccuracies: the one that bothers me the most is the Fersen and Marie Antoinette relationship. I like Lady Oscar though and Andre. What do you like or not like about it?

Post Re: Rose of Versailles
Aha! Again my beloved Rose of Versailles!!!

As I've already said, I'm partial about it, because it was my favourite cartoon when I was a child.
I think that, as a work of art, it's simply gorgeous. The protagonists, especially Lady Oscar, are deep and complex charachters. And the deepness in which it analyzes the double side of love (happyness and pain) is amazing.
Once said that, it's true, there are a lot of inaccuracies. The mian one is the charachterizatoion of Mme de Polignac and the story of Rosalie's family. As for MA and Fersen, I thnk it follows Lever's reconstruction (also for the chronology) and we talked about it...it's very controversial, and of course in the anime it's very romanticized. But a lot of charchters are weel charchterized I think. MA herself, even if exagerated in some traits, is not so far from reality, I think.

Yes, I think the daughter(Charlotte) was invented, or isn't she?

I've just recently found this anime! I love it!
Although, some things in it did bother me. Mostely the characterisation of MA. I feel as if she is portrayed to be too immature.
Having said that, i've only watched the first 11 episodes.
The art in it is fantastic! And I love Oscar and Andre! Do they end up together in the end?

Hihihi...I'm not going to tell you the end of the story :angel1: Otherwise you wouldn't taste in fully! But prepare your handkerchieves...

As for MA, I think her character becomes more complex as the stoy goes on, even if I don't like the characterization of her last days: she looks too harsh. I don't mind how she appears in the first part, on the contrary: it's true, she is depicted as immature, but I think the artist wanted to highlight her innocence in coming n contact with a difficult and corrupted world.

I think that Yolande de Polignac did have a daughter, her name escapes me but she did marry the duc de Guiche when she was very young and everybody in Marie-Antoinette's circle affectionately called her 'Guichette'.

I cant find either the original manga or the series on DVD in the US. It's very hard to come by. I've watched some clips on YouTube though and love it. I would like to see the whole thing.

This is one of my favorite series ever. Granted, there is a generous serving of historical inaccuracy, but I think we all have come to expect some degree of playing fast and furious with history. In my case, Rose of Versailles was especially helpful in engaging the interest of my high school history students. Of course I didn't use it to present firm history, but rather to get them curious enough to read and explore. Providing a point of reference has proven successful!

Rose of Versailles is also known as the Lady Oscar, is the best known titles in the shojo manga. I like Lady Oscar the most which has a beautiful character. It is mainly focuses on a girl raised as a man to became her Father's successor as leader of the Palace guards. The fact of the Rose of Versailles is true to the events of the actual revolution.

Ikeda is signing her mangas and talking about her work in Paris on the 2nd February at the Maison du Japon Quai Branly at 18:00. Just for info. My Marie Antoinette sources informed me of that, as many have the "Rose of Versailles".
