Post "L'Autrichienne"
"L'Autrichienne" a film by Pierre Granier-Deferre, starring Ute Lemper.

I became aware of this film a while ago and did not immediately acquire it because it came only in a non-compatible DVD format and it did not offer English sub-titles or dubbing. I've been thinking about the film for months now and regret not purchasing it because I forgot the website that offered it. I've paid to have the format changed; now I need the English dubbing or sub-titled version. My French is pretty good but I don't want to miss anything in this film.

The picture presents the final few days of Antolinette's life and her trial. When I first watched it, I gasped and had an emotional reeaction when Ms Lemper first appears on screen...she IS Marie Antoinette. It is a remarkable achievement.

Does anyone know of a major DVD chain or distributor in Europe that may carry an English version of this film?

If you missed it earlier this week, EM Vidal has a post about the movie: http://teaattrianon.blogspot.com/2009/11/lautrichienne-1990.html
For those who've seen it, what did you think of it? Too bad it's not widely available commercially on DVD.

This is the best film on MA I have seen. What is so interesting is that the dialogue is largely that actually documented during her trial by witnesses/clerks. The late André Castelot, the French historian and MA specialist, supervised the screenplay. Its is superb, and Ute Lemper, of German origin, portrays a perfect MA with her impeccable French tinged with a light German accent. It is exactly how I imagine the Queen to have spoken. Quite frankly when I picture her now in the Conciergerie I see Ute Lemper. Highly recommended however In French and what is more elegant 18th centurt French, so of course of more interest to French speakers.

I agree, it is the best portrayal of Marie-Antoinette ever and the best film about her, IMHO.

Ute Lemper is simply majestic and the fact that she is german adds so much reality and truthfulness to her portrayal of the Queen. And oh that scene when she prays in german in her cell before the execution is simply heartwrenching!

I entirely agree, except that I'm not sure the Queen would have prayed in German. She was out of the habit of speaking it.

I think she might have done Baron. In times of trial and hardship it is human nature to think or revert back to happy memories. We know that Marie-Antoinette always looked backed fondly on her austrian childhood and family prayers were probably part of the family routine in Vienna given that Marie-Thérese was such a devout catholic. She certainly gave orders to the governesses et all that all her children should be taught the faith and prayers. It is only speculation of course but I can very easily imagine the Queen praying in german as a source of comfort against the horrible death sentence put upon her. Besides there are things we never forget in life and a prayer in german might have been one of those...

I have several copies of the film "L'Autrichienne" a few of which are in the European format not compatible with USA produced DVDs. I've paid to have it put in the USA format.

If anyone wants to borrow either version, I'll be glad to send it to you if you promise to take care of it and return it promptly.

This was an amazing movie! The best I've seen (even though I didn't understand it); Lemper gave such a wonderful performance.

I was just wondering - is it possible to get this DVD in the US? I'd really like to purchase it. - Artois, can i ask where you purchased it?

Also, is it possible to purchase something from Amazon France if you are in the US?

As of this morning, Amazon.fr had one copy of "l'Autrichienne" available for 159 Euros. I bought my copies from Amazon USA but they were sent to me by Amazon France.

Good luck.
