Post Vaux le Vicomte
Vaux le Vicomte was the inspiration for Versailles. Nicholas Fouquet (1615-1680) used the trio of Le Brun, Le Notre, Le Vau to realize his dream. After a magnificent party in 1661, King Louis XIV had Fouquet imprisoned until he died in 1680. The King confiscated the property but eventually it was returned to the family. It remains in private hands today and is in need of a lot of work.

Merci Lilly for the photo of those mathematically precise gardens....I do like the pond view as well, a great angle you shot from. It really is a garden for promenading....I think I prefer the styles of jardin anglaise and that of Petit Trianon. As well as Malmaison's rose garden...

Still, this garden is very impressive which suits its purpose.

Beautiful photos, especially the first one. There is something about it so atmospheric, the architecture is somehow unique and imposing that I prefer it even to Versailles. For me it is a perfect harmony. Poor Nicholas Fouquet, he got too carried away in his role and wealth...

Fouquet was a most interesting man. In a sense more representative of the time of Louis XIII than of Louis XIV, close as he was to Mazarin. He had that gift for living, for enjoying life and creating beauty. He had more money than the young King, which proved his downfall, and was important, even instrumental in the career of so many great men like Le Nôtre, La Fontaine, Molière, Le Brun, Vatel...the letters of Mme de Sévigné show just how brilliantly he defended himself in his trail, saving his own life.

It's an old lesson: never outshine the boss. Whether he's a king or the Mayor of New York (as Giuliani's police chief learned to his regret).

Thanks - Glad you enjoyed the pictures! I have pictures of the inside rooms as well.

This narrow wooden stairway leads up through the dome (seen from the garden side) out onto the rooftop. I was amazed that people were allowed to climb these stairs unattended (I did) and walk on the circular area on top of the dome. I took pictures from up there too. It was a little scary.

Post Re: Vaux le Vicomte
I have encountered a little mystery -
While recently in Paris, I decided to go to the church where Nicolas Fouquet and some family members are reported to be buried. St. Mary of the Visitation, 17 Rue St. Antoine. I was directed by a nice woman to the side entrance, where she told me the crypt was. Upon entering this side entrance I spoke with the pastor of the church and told him I wanted to see the crypt and more specifically the Fouquet's. He showed me the crypt and said that Nicholas Fouquet is not interred there and that the story was a myth! Where is Nicholas Fouquet?
A photo of the crypt -

I'll try and find out more Lilly.

Its' true that the crypt photo you show doesn't seem to contain any signs of tombs. Strange.
