Post My impressions of Versailles,Paris,Fontanebleau
Bonjour everyone,
I had the privilege of visiting Paris (FINALLY after years of dreaming, saving, planning) from July 13-24. I was pleasantly surprised to find the french very polite and willing to speak English.:) and of course everyone was well dressed and beautiful. The men- well they are certainly flirtatious.:) I was also surprised by how cozy paris feels in spite of being a major city. For those who haven't been there-it is more beautiful than any postcards you have seen! Versailles!!!oh Versailles I went there 2 days. The first day which was Friday the 16th it had lots of people but not overwhelmingly so. I booked 2 tours : one in English of the apartments of the king and the other one in French for Marie Antoinette's apartments even though I am a beginner when it come to the french language. The size of Versailles amazes. The gardnes and orangerie-breathtaking.Petit trianon-most beautiful and the Little Hamlet Village so darling. The second time I visited we when there on a Wed 21 afternoon and after about 6 p.m we (my sister and i) had the whole place almost to ourselves which was truly amazing!!! We wondered thru the Petit trianons gardens, temple of love, the pavilions, the palace gardens, etc. I'll post some pics a bit later.

Good to hear you had a good time! Did you visit Fontainebleau?

I have to agree that it is a special place to live, even though like any city it has its' drawbacks.

Monika, how wonderful you got to visit Paris! Please post pictures!

Baron - I was wondering about crime in Paris? I have always felt safe on the streets there, but there are alot of beggars in Paris, some try to be persistent. A guy tried to hustle me in the Tuilleries gardens with the gold ring scam. Perhaps they concentrate in the touristy areas - I am always warned about pick-pockets too. - But what about the subways - they are generally not the best place to be at nightime in the U.S. Are there muggings and beatings there? What about murders - do you hear of much of violence in Paris? Just curious.......

Well I've lived here for 14 years and never had one single problem, but then I avold trouble. There is violence like in any big city but generally speaking its really safe, including the metro, and there are very few murders here, compared to the US. The worst places are certain "cités" or outlying suburbs, where the immigrant population is dominant. Some of those are no go areas with drugs and outbreaks of violence. The centre of Paris where I live is safe even for women at night I would say.

Wow Monika, I'm glad you went to Paris! You're right, it's a lovely city, even though I know it very little, because I've there just a couple of time. And -think of it- I've never been to Versailles! That's really a shame! I hope I can return to Paris soon, and -at last- see the place where MA lived.

Post Re: My impressions of Versailles,Paris,Fontanebleau
Baron- i did make it to Fontanebleau. IT was really beautiful but my camera died on me so i couldn't take as many pictures as I wanted.I only explored the palace and a bit of the gardens.I wish I had more time to explore the estate.

As far as safety is concerned I only felt a bit unsafe twice- the first time while waking the the Dennis neighborhood while trying to find the Saint Dennis Basilica.A lot of poeple were staring at my sister and me....which I found unnerving.Maybe because many of them were Muslim and most of the women wore head covering while my sister and I were with "loose" hair??? The second time was on our last day in Paris i dont knwo what were we thinking but we figured that since we had to wake up at 4 am in order to get to the airport for our 7.15 am flight we should stay up all night. After dinner at a restaurant in the Latin Quarter which we finished at 12 a.m we decided to go by the Eiffel tower and see it one last time. As we were walking over there ( it was around 2 a.m by the time we got there) we were harassed by groups of men/boys. As we sat down on the lawn this small boy and this older guy ran over to us started speaking to us in french. We pretended that we cannot understand English, french, spanish or any other language they mentioned. The little boy got super angry, while the other young man just stared at us, and screamed at us , and threw grass at us too. as he turned around to go back to his gang I proceeded to mutter to my sister in english which was a mistake (plus having too much wine with dinner :) ) "little b****! he turned around starting to scream at us again and showing rude gestures. I decided that i was not having it so we stood up ready to walk out since there was no point getting into a physical fight that young boy. When we were about 50 m. away they boy ran up to us again saying something again in french but we told him loudly to GO AWAY! later we were approached by another group of men but we did not respond to their questions....lets just say i was more than happy to spend 30 euros to get to our hotel.....

A great set of photographic impressions of your trip!

The photos from Carnavelet are great, I am especially touched to see Chou's homework.

Monika, you and your friend are very pretty, and I found the picture of you sitting on the grass in front of the Petit Trianon very charming!

Looks like you had a lovely time (except the male harassment part, glad that you kept safe).

Very nice photos! It seems like you had a great time! :)

The problem with French guys harassing girls is not new. It seems to be something to do with the latin temperament and in a sense the way that French men perceive women. That sort of behaviour is probably bred in school, anf the ironic thing is that it misses its' mark, because the great majority of women hate to be hassled and much prefer a more subtle approach. In some ways I believe that young French women contribute to this behaviour because I see every day, as I pass by the local high school to work, their tarty way of dressing and seemingly airhead way of going on, smoking and fooling around on the pavement or glued to their stupid phones. I reckon that the French boys, brought up in this shallow culture, apply this way of behaving to any girl they come across at anytime. The problem is that it is not without danger, because of groups spurring each other on. That being said stories of raping of tourists and such like are very rare, if unheard, of in Paris, thank God. They know their limits and its' more of a nuisance than anything else. Where did the subtle courting of the 18th century go, where hearts were won by a well phrased witty reply....

Beautiful pictures!! Isn't Paris simply magical?! Versailles is my favourite place on planet earth, and I love the warm feeling it gives you despite it being such a massive estate.

Cannot wait until I get to go back.

Cheers 8)

I understand that very well! It's just like that in Italy as well...I guess it has to do with the Latin culture, and it's something that can get on nerves
