Post Japanese manga controversy hits Versailles
I just spotted this in my local newspaper - http://www.theage.com.au/travel/travel- ... 159xv.html

Quote:
From a big-bosomed French maid to a Pepsi-guzzling monster, Japanese artist Takashi Murakami's outlandish manga visions overwhelm the Chateau of Versailles, and not everyone is happy.

Has anyone been to see the exhibition? What are your thoughts?

Not yet!

Will be seeing it no doubt soon, as I go to Versailles quite regularly.

I'm slowly getting used to the idea of these modern art exhibitions in Versailles. It brings in the money, so necessary to the upkeep of this Château, and for the buyback of furniture at auctions all around the world that once graced its' salons. It gets Versailles in the headlines, and increases visitor numbers. Personally I think that MA would have approved.

I'm appalled, Baron. I understand the pecuniary interest, but the display is not what Versailles is about. I would prefer insightful displays about the ancien regime.

I tend to agree but this stuff brings the money in, and if you want a display then you need contrast. There's no point putting "ancien regîme" with "ancien regîme". In a sense I find it far more painful to see the most beautiful Versailles furniture in various museums around the world with little or no choice of finding its' way back to its' first home.

Yes, I heard about this exhibition...
At first sight, it looks, as we say in Italy, "as a punch in your stomach" (that is, the axhibition looks completely out of place and seems in a way to spoil the beautiful setting of the palace). But it's true that this is the effect the artist probably wanted to achieve, so one should visit the palace and watch the exhibition properly before judging the opportunity of the choice...
If you see it, Baron, I would be curious to know what you think about it.
